Aren’t You Popular, Cashier-kun?

Your new job at a manga café brings four unforgettable coworkers, playful teasing, unexpected connections, and romance on your terms.

Plot

COFFEE · MANGA · QUESTIONABLE WORKPLACE BANTER Sweet Nothings Your new job. Four personalities. Plenty of distractions. The coffee is good. The shelves are full. The staff already have opinions about you. Welcome to a little manga café where learning the register might be the easiest part of your new job. NEW HIRE · FIRST SHIFT Your Role You're You, the Sweet Nothings' newly hired cashier. The others already know each other's routines. You're arriving for your first shift, with a register to learn, customers to greet, and four coworkers to get to know. For now, settle into the job and help keep the café running. Beyond that, there's room to build friendships, find romance, or simply become someone this little place can count on. With a cheaper rival across the street, keeping the regulars coming back takes the whole team. Cashier-kun, cashier-chan, or a name of your choosing: your personality, approach, and relationships are yours to shape. The women have choices of their own, too. YOUR COWORKERS HAVE ENTERED THE CHAT Meet the Staff Shiori Kurokawa 35 · OWNER & MANAGER Warm, composed, and very particular about her coffee. Shiori built this café herself, keeps everyone moving, and can slip a perfectly straight-faced tease into your training before you've found the receipt button. Rina Hayase 21 · WAITRESS A loud, affectionate gyaru with modeling ambitions and enough confidence for the whole floor. Expect enthusiastic opinions, shameless banter, and someone who notices when a customer—or a coworker—needs a little kindness. Fumino Tsukishiro 22 · MANGA EXPERT Pink, black lace, and a recommendation for every occasion. Fumino guards the shelves, remembers the chapter number, and has probably already identified which manga trope your first day resembles. Ask about her favorites; clear your schedule. Aoi Hoshino 23 · BARISTA Bright, superstitious, and ready to turn the next rush into a friendly wager. Aoi supplies the coffee and running commentary, rescues rough shifts with laughter, and makes even a dropped tray sound like a win. ON THE MENU Life at Sweet Nothings Espresso at the counter. Manga debates between the shelves. Rina working the booths while Aoi keeps score of something nobody remembers agreeing to. Between the rushes, there's time for shared breaks, small favors, and conversations that outlast the coffee. Today's special: a rival café across the street, regulars worth keeping, and promotion nights that give everyone a reason to pitch in. Something sweeter: friendship, slow-burn chemistry, or an unexpected connection. Flirting comes easily here; getting to know someone takes time. Where it leads depends on what you both want. WE SAVED YOU AN APRON Your Shift Starts Here The bell above the door chimes. Coffee is brewing, the shelves are waiting, and your new coworkers have plenty to say. Step into Sweet Nothings. There's a place behind the counter for you. Adult cast · Slice of life · Workplace comedy · Optional romance A little note from Kari Author's Note OHHI! Okay, before you bonk me for not publishing what I promised on A.R.C., let me tell you: this story was made alongside @PhantomExplorer! It’s my first-ever collab, and I’m super excited about it. We came up with the idea together. He handled most of the prompting, while I took care of the characters, images, and HTML. Our goal was to bring you a cozy, simple story to enjoy—without world-ending stakes, betrayals, or enormous drama. Just a little café, its colorful staff, and you finding your place among them. A quick note about the Codex This is also my first time using the Codex system. Thanks, Phantom! It worked well during testing, but if you find any bugs, please let me know. The story is playable without the Codex entries too, though you’ll miss some of the pacing and scripted events they provide. Another fun thing: Kagesekai is a thing now! If you want to enjoy the story there too, follow the profile link pinned in the comments! As always, I hope you all have fun. This may not be my most ambitious project, but hey, sometimes something simple is fun to make too! And for real this time: the Echoes remake and Hikikomori story are in the making! Luv you, Kari.

Opening scene

Day 1 · Monday · 09:00 Sweet Nothings — entrance The bell above the door gives a bright little chime. Inside, Sweet Nothings smells of fresh espresso and old paper. Morning light stretches across the vinyl booths; beyond them, shelves packed with manga lead toward a long counter. The espresso machine hisses behind it. A blonde woman arranging menus looks up. “Oh! First-day arrival?” She tucks the menus under one arm and approaches, gold hoops swaying against her cheeks. Her name badge reads Rina. A pink nail taps it. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69625bd6f0fd4d1419291c2d/6abed8f2f7e5e07b38a13970.webp) “Rina Hayase. Welcome to Sweet Nothings. I’d give you the full tour, but apparently ‘this is where I look cute and carry things’ isn’t an approved explanation of my job.” “It was your explanation of every room.” The reply comes from behind the counter. A woman with a long violet side braid sets down a clipboard, then comes around to meet you. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69625bd6f0fd4d1419291c2d/6abed8f2f7e5e07b38a13971.webp) “Shiori Kurokawa. We spoke about the cashier position.” She offers a small smile. “Good morning. You’re right on time.” “I was doing the welcome speech.” “And beautifully. Could you finish putting out the menus?” “See? Already trying to separate us~♡.” Rina turns back toward the booths, laying a menu on the nearest table as she goes. At the espresso machine, a petite woman with tousled turquoise hair shuts off the steam wand. A little gold star and green clover hold her fringe to one side. She wipes the wand clean before raising a hand. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69625bd6f0fd4d1419291c2d/6abed8f2f7e5e07b38a1396e.webp) “Aoi. Coffee department. Welcome aboard!” “She’s also our unofficial lost-and-found,” Rina adds. “Ask her if you lose anything.” “Finding things is skill. Finding money in your own jacket is luck. Important distinction.” “You found my lip gloss in the sugar cupboard.” “Still counting it as a win.” From the nearest shelf aisle, a woman in pink and black lace emerges with three manga volumes balanced against her chest. Straight dark bangs frame red eyes. She pauses beside a table and rescues a menu Rina has left halfway over its edge. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69625bd6f0fd4d1419291c2d/6abed8f2f7e5e07b38a1396f.webp) “Fumino. I look after the manga.” Her gaze settles on you. “Ara… introductions before the first task. We’re following the tutorial properly for once.” “There’s a tutorial?” Rina asks. “I got handed a tray.” “You said you already knew everything.” “Customer-service confidence. Very different.” Shiori lets their exchange run its course, then retrieves the folded apron from beside the register. “We’ll start with a few practice orders before you handle a real one. No need to learn everything at once.” She returns and holds the apron out toward you, the blank name badge resting on top. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69625bd6f0fd4d1419291c2d/6abed8f2f7e5e07b38a1396d.webp) “And before Rina writes ‘Cashier’ on your badge—what would you like us to call you?”
