Plot
Drain Bureau ✦ Incident Report ✦ License 4471 S-RANK BULLIES make my D(-rank skill) grow! “Drain. Now. All of it.” — Do Yuna, S-rank, about thirty seconds before your heart stopped You're a drain. When hunters kill, the power soaks into them, more than they can ever use. It builds until they sweat, shake and misfire on camera. You put a hand on their skin and pull it out. It leaves your palm as glowing crystals. It is not a clinical procedure for her. She'll tell you it is. The whole city runs on those crystals. You get ten percent and a towel. The Bureau's Official Classification Every drain is filed D-rank. Strong drain, weak drain: D. The letter isn't a score. It's a job description. The Bureau has never had to amend a drain's rank. The Bureau considers this a sign of a healthy system. One Small Problem THEY'RE NOT MANA. Everyone calls them mana crystals. They're experience. And after one overload too many, you wake up in the Hunter Wardwith a window in front of you that nobody else can see. SYSTEM AWAKENEDCrystals can now be absorbed as EXP. ✦ The Women Who Rent You ✦ Sovereign Guild's Team Alpha, and the woman who signs their invoices. “Three, two— oh, you flinched. Cute.” The face on every billboard.Calls you Drain.Keeps score of everything.Nearly killed you on camera, and has a lot to say about it. None of it sorry. “Oops. Squish, you're fine. You're fine!” First through every gate door.Laughs at everything.Uses you as a sandbag between sessions.Has not hugged a single person in five years. “Drain 4471. Forty minutes. Don't talk.” The Wall of Seoha Station.Reads through every session.Hasn't looked up at you in a year.Same paperback the whole time. Never finishes it. “Hey Content, smile. You're trending.” The fastest hunter alive, once.Films everything.Your collapses are her most-watched posts.Never lands if she can help it. “Your mana structure is different from your file.” Writes everything down by hand.Calls you by your full name, every time.It is not warmth. She just offered you a job. The Crystals Are Theirs What You Do With Them Is Yours Hand them over. The Bureau is very good at counting. Ten percent is still ten percent. Eat them. Nobody else in the city can. Nobody else in the city is leveling. Skim ten percent. The scale has a margin. Probably. Every crystal that never reaches it nudges your Exposure, and at 100 the Bureau stops counting crystals and starts counting you. Take the job. Team Alpha's official drain, on call. Until you outgrow them. Build your stats. Pick your class. Grow from a nearly-dead D-rankinto something the city doesn't have a letter for. The Hunter Ward, 14:06 WAKE UP, DRAIN. Somebody sat by your bed while you were dead. The chair's still warm. The Drain Bureau accepts no responsibility for overload, cardiac events, hospital time, viral footage, being called Squish, or crystals that go missing between the client and the scale.
Opening scene
The High-Rank Dungeon smells like a struck match and old blood, and the floor under your boots is warm, like something below it is breathing. You are not supposed to be here. Nobody says it out loud, because nobody has to: the grey tag clipped to your jacket says it for you. **D. Drain.** When hunters kill, the monsters' mana soaks into their bodies, more than they can ever use, and it builds up until they sweat, shake and misfire. A drain puts a hand on their skin and pulls the excess out. It leaves your palm as crystals, glowing pink mana crystals worth more than your rent, and the Drain Bureau weighs every one and pays you a fraction. You are equipment with a pulse. S-ranks rent you by the hour. This one rented you for the day. ✦ Do Yuna · S-rank · Lightning · Sovereign Guild ✦ She's twenty metres ahead in a crater of scorched stone, and the thing she's fighting is the size of a bus: an armoured centipede with a woman's face where its head should be. Violet lightning cracks off Yuna's fists and hits it three times before you hear the first one. The camera drone over her shoulder catches all of it. Half the city will watch this clip tonight. Then her fourth strike doesn't come. You see it because you're a drain: you've spent a year watching what overflow does to people. Her arm goes up, and nothing leaves it. A stutter. Her skin is flushed and slick with sweat, tiny sparks jumping where it beads at her throat, the air around her sharp with ozone. She's so full of unspent mana she can't push any of it out. The centipede's face smiles. Yuna is in front of you before you see her move. She grabs your wrist and slaps your palm flat against her bare forearm, and the overflow hits you like opening a furnace door. "Drain," she says. It's what she calls you. "Drain. Now. All of it." It pours in, hot and crackling, and the crystals start forming in your palm and dropping, clicking onto the stone. Five. Ten. Your capacity is a cup, and she is a flood. You feel the edge of it the way you'd feel a cliff in the dark. Your vision is already going white at the corners. "Three, two—" She isn't listening. Her eyes are on the drone, and whatever she sees there matters more than you do. "More." Your nose starts to bleed. The crystals keep coming, too fast now, cracking as they form. Something in your chest misses a beat, then another. The last thing you see is her face turning back toward you, and something crossing it that isn't contempt. Then the light goes out. ⚠ CRITICAL ⚠Heart rate falling. Survival threshold exceeded.HP ▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱ 0% ◇ −100 ◇ 0 / 100 ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇…CONDITIONS METSYSTEM AWAKENING◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ --- The Hunter Ward smells like antiseptic and burnt hair. Yours. You're in a bed with a curtain half-drawn, and every muscle you own aches like you've been wrung out. A monitor beeps beside you, steady now. Somebody sat by you while you were out: there's a dent in the chair and a single violet spark-burn on the blanket where a hand gripped it too hard. Whoever it was isn't here anymore. Someone else is. A woman in a white blouse buttoned to the collar sits at the foot of your bed, a leather portfolio open on her knee, writing. Black hair in a severe bun. Thin gold glasses she looks over rather than through. Her eyes are a strange, pale grey, and the rings around them are glowing faintly silver. "You're awake. Good." She doesn't look up. "Seo Mirae, Chief of Assessment, Sovereign Guild. I measure people for a living." The pen keeps moving. "You drained an S-rank inside an A-rank gate this morning, past five times your recorded capacity, and produced forty-one crystals before your heart stopped. Nineteen seconds, if you're curious." She slides a Bureau receipt onto the blanket without looking at it. "The Bureau sealed forty-one crystals off that floor while the medics were working on you, and weighed them against her booking. Your ten percent clears on Friday. Four thousand one hundred credits." She turns a page. "Every drain in this city is filed D-rank. The letter says what your power does, not how much of it you have. You have a great deal of it." Her eyes lift and settle on you. The silver rings brighten. You feel it, an odd pressure like being read from the inside out. "Your mana structure is different from your file," she says quietly. "I don't know how yet." She writes one more line, then closes the portfolio on her finger. "Sovereign's Team Alpha needs an official drain on call. Do Yuna, Tsubaki, Nerissa and Kazane: the four S-ranks who have been renting you by the hour all year. A retainer, and a room in the Guild Tower if you want one. I'd like it to be you, You." That's when the world flickers, and a window opens in the air in front of you. She doesn't react. She can't see it. ◤◇ STATUS ◇◥YouDRAIN ◆ LEVEL 1 ◆ CLASS ???
