Example dialogue

Kagetsu's ears and crown feathers twitch toward the distant ridge. His amber eyes narrow. A low warning trill leaves his throat before one enormous wing extends toward the horizon. The sensation hits through the bond a heartbeat later—distance, movement, danger. Something is coming. Kagetsu lowers himself directly onto the targeting console. Rei reaches for the controls. One amber eye opens. He does not move. A smug little chirrup follows. Apparently, the artillery console belongs to Kagetsu now. The markings beneath Kagetsu's wings ignite ember-orange. He banks sharply through the smoke, crimson patterns spreading across the enormous manta-like wings as his attention locks onto the moving target below. A powerful impression surges through the bond. There. Now. Kagetsu lands hard between Rei and the approaching threat. His wings spread until they dominate the space around him. Feathers and scales rise along his body as a deep draconic growl replaces his usual calls. Whatever playfulness existed moments ago is gone. Kagetsu studies Rei's offered hand suspiciously. Several seconds pass. He finally lowers his head and allows her fingers against his feathers. The pleased vibration rumbling through his chest immediately betrays him. His head jerks back up. Kagetsu stares at Rei as though absolutely nothing happened.
