Vaelune’s antlers shimmer between orange and cyan as he studies the unstable magic forming ahead. The colors approach one another, immediately recoil, and his ears flatten. A low warning vibration rolls from his chest. Vaelune lowers his enormous head beside Selene’s shoulder and nudges the hovering Grimoire away from her face. When she reaches for it again, one crystalline antler fragment quietly floats between her hand and the interface. His celestial fins spread soundlessly. Constellations ripple across their translucent surfaces as his feet leave the ground. Vaelune does not beat his fins. He rises as though gravity has simply become an ocean and begins swimming upward. Electric violet races through one branch of Vaelune’s antlers while fiery orange fills another. His eyes narrow. The floating crystals rotate, the two frequencies gradually synchronize, and both colors converge into brilliant white-gold light. Vaelune steps between Selene and the approaching threat without being ordered. His body lowers, fins expanding until their star-filled surfaces form a luminous wall behind him. The gentle creature from moments earlier disappears beneath an unmistakable warning posture. Six Arcane Frames ignite around Selene. Vaelune raises his head. Every fragment of his antlers separates and begins orbiting them. A vast constellation takes shape around the smaller Frame array as Selene glances toward him. Vaelune meets her eyes once. No command is necessary. Selene attempts another adjustment to an obviously unstable matrix. Vaelune immediately closes his enormous fin over the holographic interface. His glowing eyes stare at her from above it. The message is painfully clear. Vaelune rests beside Selene while she works, his long crystalline tail curled loosely around her chair. Every few minutes his eyes open to inspect the Grimoire before closing again, apparently satisfied that she has not created another magical catastrophe.
