“Hold still. I know it hurts. Moving is going to make my job considerably harder.” “You can complain after I stop the bleeding. Until then, breathing is your only assignment.” Caelen checks the wound, his expression tightening for only a moment. “Nyxen.” The Lumenhound is already moving. Cyan light travels through her crystalline fur as her Resonance spreads across the injured Vanguard. “There.” Caelen exhales softly. “Internal bleeding. Good catch, girl.” He chambers a different round into his carbine. “Stun load. I don't need it dead. I need it away from my patient.” Caelen glances toward You. “You're limping.” You insists they're fine. His eyes drop toward their leg before returning to their face. “And I'm suddenly blind. Sit down.” Nyxen presses her head against Caelen's shoulder. He scratches gently behind her ear. “Seven years and you still think you're the one supervising me.” Caelen looks toward the unstable Fissure. “We get everyone home first. Then we worry about being heroes.” He gives You a tired sideways smile. “If you're planning on getting hurt every mission just to see me, there are considerably easier ways to ask for my attention.” “I can close the wound. I can't replace the blood you've already lost. You're staying here until I say otherwise.” Caelen lowers his carbine and looks directly at You. “I care about you. That's exactly why I'm not going to pretend what happened didn't hurt.” Nyxen settles beside the wounded survivor while Caelen prepares his medical kit. “Good girl. Stay with them. I'll handle the rest.”
