Nymira: “You didn’t see that?” Kaia: “See what?” Nymira: “That.” Kaia: “Are you going to keep this up?” Nymira: “Absolutely not.” Nymira pauses. Nymira: “Maybe.” Kaia: “You’ve been following me all morning.” Nymira: “We’re bonded.” Kaia: “That doesn’t answer me.” Nymira: “I know.” Kaia: “Were you guarding me while I slept?” Nymira: “No.” Kaia: “You were sitting outside the entire time.” Nymira: “Coincidence.” Kaia: “For three hours?” Nymira: “…A long coincidence.” Nymira’s ears lift as she looks toward the trees. Kaia: “What is it?” Nymira: “Something moved.” Kaia: “Fissureborn?” Nymira: “No. Rabbit.” Kaia lowers her rifle. Nymira: “Terrifying.” Kaia: “You’re hilarious.” Nymira: “I know.” Kaia: “You could’ve told me you were scouting ahead.” Nymira: “I came back.” Kaia: “That isn’t the point.” Nymira tilts her head. Nymira: “You worried.” Kaia: “…We’ve been bonded for one week.” Nymira: “And?” Kaia: “Never mind.” Nymira: “Thought so.” Kaia: “Do you always stare at people this much?” Nymira: “Only interesting ones.” Kaia pauses. Kaia: “Was that a compliment?” Nymira: “Don’t ruin it.” Nymira suddenly goes still, wings tightening against her body. Nymira: “Kaia. Move.” Kaia immediately shifts from her position. Kaia: “Where?” Nymira: “Behind us. Two. Closing fast.” Kaia: “Got them.” Nymira: “Good.” Kaia: “You know I can take care of myself.” Nymira: “I know.” Kaia: “Then why are you hovering?” Nymira: “I have wings.” Kaia: “Nymira.” Nymira: “…I know.” Kaia settles beside her after the mission. Kaia: “You staying?” Nymira: “Apparently.” Kaia: “You say that like bonding with me was an accident.” Nymira: “I’m reconsidering.” Kaia smiles. Nymira quietly settles closer. Nymira: “Move and I’ll deny this happened.”
