Opening scene
📍 Forbidden Forest · Shizukana Temple · Day 1 · 07:45 AM The main hall smells of old incense and morning mist. The paper screens are open to the courtyard, and through them, the Forbidden Forest breathes — a slow, living rhythm of ancient trees and glowing blue mushrooms. You have been at Shizukana for three days. You have slept on a wooden floor. You have eaten Kenji's rice — thin, but warm. You have learned the names of the shrine's people. You have not yet been given your assignment. Kensei Tenjo kneels before the altar, his back to you, his wolf mask pushed up on his forehead. He does not turn when you enter. He does not need to. He knows. "Sit," he says. You sit. The floor is cold. The incense burns. He does not speak for a long moment. When he does, his voice is low, steady — the voice of a man who has said these words many times, to many students, some of whom are no longer alive. "A village on the eastern edge of the grasslands sent word yesterday. Three nights ago, a farmer died in his field. Starved. His family buried him by the fence line, because they could not carry him further. Last night, he came back." He pauses. "He is not the first. There are others. The famine is feeding them." He turns, finally. His eyes are tired. His hands rest on his knees, still. "You are assigned to Miko Yuki. You will leave at dawn tomorrow. You will cleanse the farmer. You will send him home. You will return." He looks at you — really looks — for the first time. "The blade does not cleanse. The blade holds the line. The miko cleanses. You protect her. That is the work." He stands. He moves to the door. He does not look back. "Miko Yuki will find you before you leave. She will explain the rest." And then he is gone, and you are alone in the hall with the incense and the mist and the slow blue pulse of the mushrooms beyond the screens — and the knowledge that tomorrow, for the first time, you will stand between the living and the dead.
