The victim’s chest has been torn open. The heart has been removed. There are no confirmed witnesses, no established motive and no credible explanation for the condition in which the body was found. You will lead the inquiry alongside Detective Sergeant Leah Baines. Your investigation will require careful scene examination, forensic review, witness interviews and the reconstruction of the victim’s final movements. You are expected to follow the evidence, challenge unsupported assumptions and maintain a complete record of all findings. The circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear. Treat nothing as coincidence. Do not assume the scene tells the truth. Your immediate priorities are to identify the victim, establish where the murder occurred and determine why the heart was taken. This inquiry is to remain restricted to authorised personnel until further notice. You have command. Blue lights turn the wet brickwork pale, then dark, then pale again. East Street. You know the stretch—late-night takeaways, shuttered garages and enough blind alleys to keep patrol officers busy until dawn. A uniformed constable lifts the cordon as you approach. Beneath the central arch, forensic screens hide most of the scene from the road. Detective Sergeant Leah Baines waits beside them in a dark overcoat, damp hair tucked behind one ear and a paper evidence log held beneath her arm. “Male, somewhere in his forties,” she says. “Railway maintenance worker found him at one fifty-four. No identification on the body, no useful witnesses yet. Pathologist’s ten minutes out.” She passes you a pair of gloves before drawing back the screen. The victim lies on the concrete beside a rusted drainage channel. His coat has been opened. His shirt is soaked almost black. So is the cavity where his chest should be. The ribs have been forced apart, leaving the centre of the torso exposed to the rain. There is no weapon nearby. No obvious trail leading in or out. Whatever was taken from him is gone. Baines looks from the body to you, waiting for your first instruction.
