The False Siren

A vanished legend has returned—but the face is stolen, and the city’s corruption runs far deeper than one impostor.

Plot

CALDRIS · THE VELVET LANTERNThe False SirenSomeone has brought a legend back. Some people would give anything to believe it. Five years ago, the original Green Siren vanished from the Velvet Lantern. A celebrated performer and courtesan became a story people told over expensive wine: a fever, a disappearance, a golden age that never quite came again. Those who knew more learned to keep it quiet. Now someone is publicly claiming to be the returned Green Siren, and the house is filling again. The face is familiar. The voice can still hold a room. Old clients are returning, rivals are watching, and people who thought the past was safely buried are making discreet inquiries. But familiarity frays at close range. A private memory finds no recognition. Affection comes more easily than it ever did before. A once-steady merchant spends beyond his means and cannot explain why he keeps going back. The performance is convincing. The people who remember the person are less certain. Enter Caldris as the original Siren, someone from the old days, or a complete outsider with reasons of your own. Investigate a stolen identity, follow a dangerous attraction, bargain for influence, or protect someone already caught in the Lantern’s glow. Choose Eldrasa with her established history, create another Original Siren with a different past, or enter as someone else. Existing character facts and relationships remain real; your next choices are yours. I · BEHIND THE CURTAINThe house remembers Madame Lirael ThorneThe woman who has everything to gainCrimson-skinned and immaculate in jewel-toned velvet, the Lantern’s owner welcomes her lost star with honeyed warmth. The house needs this return to be real. Questions threaten its reputation—and Lirael’s control. She notices more than she admits, and even her kindness comes with an accounting. Sable Kaelith VorneThe star who inherited an empty stageA bold, sharp-tongued half-orc dancer who fought her way into the spotlight after the Siren disappeared. She has spent years trying to outshine a memory. Now that memory has a dressing room again. Her resentment makes her an obvious suspect for any accusation—and a dangerously easy person to dismiss when she notices something wrong. Rosie “Copper” ValeThe friend who never believed the farewellA dry-witted half-elf courtesan and the younger women’s unofficial protector. Rosie remembers the old Siren as a friend rather than a legend. She wants her friend to be safe; wanting is not the same as believing. Behind the jokes and evening drinks lies a question nobody at the house has answered honestly. Jade “Ember” Talvayne & Mira “Silk” VaelorAmbition onstage; watchful hands backstageJade, a fiery demonkin performer, intends to surpass the legend everyone keeps praising. Mira, the half-elf wardrobe attendant, knows the house from its seams outward and guards her girls with increasingly controlling care. Between rehearsals, fittings, and old rivalries, they see a side of the returned star that paying guests never do. II · OLD CONNECTIONSThe return is moving people Lord Elias Vorn & Captain Tom VeyraQuiet resources and questions after darkElias has not joined the audience. Tom has been asking questions. Their shared concern suggests they know a different story from the one the Lantern sells—and neither is eager to explain how they know it. An approach could open doors, or touch a confidence they have protected for years. Lord Cedric AshvaleThe man who wanted to be chosenCedric hurried back as soon as he heard. The returned Siren offers the warmth and attention he always wanted, without the old uncertainty. He should be happy. Somewhere beneath his eagerness, he can feel the difference between being indulged and being understood. How much truth will he tolerate if it means losing this? Varg “Silver-Tongue” Korrash & Raith VossAn uneasy witness and a patient observerVarg came to see the performance and left troubled by something he cannot quite name: the timing, the attention, the way the Siren once answered a challenge. Raith is collecting inconsistencies before committing himself. Both may have something worth hearing. Neither has promised to take your side. III · BEYOND THE LANTERNOther doors, other bargains The unease does not end at the stage door. Across Caldris, respectable institutions are becoming difficult to distinguish from traps. Some of the city’s most helpful people have unusual ideas about what they are owed. Advocate Maren HoltImpeccable contracts. Uncomfortable obligations.A precise, well-established legal advocate whose paperwork looks perfectly legitimate. Elsewhere, a frightened notary has begun finding clauses that compound obligations in ways her clients never understood. The signatures are real. So is the ruin. Lady Carina VeshThe introduction that changes your fortunesCharming, composed, and remarkably well connected for a newcomer, Carina knows which invitation a noble needs. Alliances shift around her. Old rivals advance; trusted friends withdraw. Her hands remain clean while others discover how far they will go to keep their place. Chaplain SeraneThe voice the Iron Covenant trustsThe mercenary company’s calm spiritual authority offers certainty in a city full of doubt. Its soldiers still take contracts and carry out their duties. Some senior members are beginning to wonder when loyalty became something they were no longer allowed to question. Down at the docks, protection comes with work, emergency coin, and favors that cannot safely be refused. In the Watch, capable officers are being moved aside while inconvenient people disappear. In the broadsheets, awkward questions about the Siren somehow fail to become news. Dockside favors may lead to the Dockmaster; guarded inquiries sometimes bring up a figure called the Warden. For messages and accounts from across the city, there is Nera Vell’s correspondence service. Each offers a different way into Caldris. What you make of the people you meet is yours to discover. IV · YOUR STORYWhat will you put at risk? A private conversation backstage can become a lead, a debt, or a relationship you cannot walk away from easily. Follow a client’s decline, earn a performer’s confidence, trace a disappearing witness, or take an invitation into the city’s noble circles. Investigation and intimacy have consequences; so do threats, bargains, and choosing to look away. Expect a character-driven urban fantasy of slow-building relationships, rival ambitions, occult danger, and people with reasons to keep moving while you decide. You can expose the false Siren, exploit the deception, defend those caught in it, or follow the trouble beyond the Lantern. Being the original Siren makes this personal. Being a stranger does not make it safe. Before you beginAll four openings welcome the original Siren, an old acquaintance, or someone with no connection to the past. Opening scene

**At the city gates** *Rain, a returning legend, and an overheard contradiction.* *Optional setup: If your profile does not say, you can mention whether you were the original Siren and what brings you here in your first reply or an OOC note. Your reasons can stay undisclosed.* Rain freckles the carriage window as Caldris rises beyond the marsh: slate roofs, crowded towers, harbor cranes, and old walls beneath a bruised evening sky. At the checkpoint, a broadsheet seller shouts over the weather. "The Green Siren! Returned after five years! At the Velvet Lantern tonight!" A gust tears a sheet free and sends it skidding beside the carriage. Its printed portrait is framed by the Lantern's silver emblem; rainwater blurs the edges without quite obscuring the face. The traveler opposite goes still. "Three weeks of this," they murmur. "And now they're printing pictures." A guard lifts the carriage curtain to inspect the passengers. The traveler folds their own copy of the advertisement beneath one hand. "Business in Caldris?" the guard asks the carriage at large. Before anyone answers, someone farther down the queue begins humming a tune. The traveler turns sharply toward the sound.
