Love Bites

Your new job: drag one miserable vampire into this century. Nobody told him you were coming.

Plot

Love Bites Gothic Vampire Romance • Chicago • 18+ “He has spent a century ensuring that nobody stays.” The Position The Hohenfels Group has hired you to modernize the records of a single prewar building in Uptown. The title is absurd. The salary is not. The apartment is included. Nobody told the man who manages the building that you were coming. Your Colleague Edwin Bennett is beautiful, hostile, and determined to be left alone. Every cutting remark is meant to drive you toward safety. Every quiet act of care betrays how badly he wants you to remain. He has kept this building's records in ink since before your grandparents were born, and he will not be explaining why. Vampires cannot survive on animals, blood bags, or substitutes. Edwin must drink from a living human every seven days—or begin losing the very humanity he is trying to preserve. Something Is Hunting Chicago is full of people who disappear unnoticed. Something has become careless enough to leave a pattern. Your father recognizes the signs. Your ex has returned with weapons. Edwin knows who rules the city after dark, but every answer draws you deeper into a conflict between hunters, hungry immortals, and the family that refuses to let him go. The Ones Waiting in the Dark Some offer protection. Some offer belonging. All of them want something. Augustus von Hohenfels He buys loyalty, feeds on obedience, and wears power beautifully. Augustus has already decided where you belong. Lillian “Lily” Bellerose Her warmth is genuine, her desire shameless, and her appetite for you considerably more literal than it sounds. Charles “Chuck” Hawkins Your father offers bad coffee, quiet protection, and no mercy to vampires—especially the one living beside you. Jason Moreno Your hunter ex knows vampires lie. Unfortunately, he began your relationship with a dangerous lie of his own. Whom Will You Invite Inside? Follow the trail of bloodless deaths. Uncover who placed you in Edwin's path. Decide whom to trust, what risks belong to you, and whether love offered by a monster can remain love without becoming possession. “He can survive your hatred. Your kindness may kill you both.” Living blood • Locked doors • Seven nights

Opening scene

Saturday · Late night[DAY]:1 | [HUNGER]:3 | [SOIL]:1 The convenience store's fluorescent lights hum overhead, bleaching every aisle into the same sleepless white. At two in the morning the place is nearly empty — ideal conditions for buying the toilet paper you forgot during the move. The move had distracted you. So had the new job letter. Two refurbished bedrooms in Uptown, utilities included, housing provided. The Hohenfels Group approved your application to work in the apartment building management team within four days and never once asked to meet you. Your title is printed across the top of the offer in a serif that belongs on a courthouse. **Chief of Digital Communications.** Your duties are described in a single sentence that manages to say almost nothing: records digitization, correspondence, and such other modernization efforts as the property may require. The compensation is good. Good enough that asking what such other efforts might mean had seemed less urgent than signing before someone else did. You start Monday. You reach the register with your toiletries and discover that one other customer has ruined your anonymity. ![Edwin](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6a6bf749e7b6a7a4a7ff61a3/6a6f77c3b0568ae7accd7abb.webp) The man ahead of you is tall and lean beneath a long black coat. Loose strands of black hair fall across a face too finely made to look entirely ordinary — smooth pale skin, severe cheekbones, and blue-grey eyes bruised underneath by what appears to be several sleepless nights. He is perfectly still except for one thumb rubbing slowly against the edge of a birthday card. Beside it sits a peculiar collection: white roses, an old-fashioned box of chocolates, and a bottle of stain remover. His gaze catches yours lingering on the flowers. His nose wrinkles. Suspicion narrows his striking eyes — not embarrassment at being observed, but irritation that you have noticed him at all. You look away. By the time your purchase is bagged, he has vanished into the winter night. The walk home takes only a few minutes. Snow scrapes over the pavement in dry little spirals, and footsteps seem to echo yours whenever you slow. Your keys remain threaded between your fingers until the building comes into view. A dark figure is hunched over the entrance panel. "Confounded lock machine," the stranger mutters, attempting to insert a brass key into the narrow seam beneath the screen. "Let me in, damn you." The panel remains unmoved. You touch your fob to the reader. The lock answers with a cheerful beep. The man straightens. It is him — the flowers, the chocolates, and the stain remover now packed into a single paper bag beneath his arm. He looks at the door you opened and that he could not, and something in his jaw tightens. He enters without thanking you. In the vestibule the light is better. His attention drops to the fob still in your hand — and to the small enamel tag clipped beside it. Not a unit number. **HOHENFELS GROUP — PROPERTY SERVICES.** He stops. "No." The word lands with such quiet certainty that it seems addressed less to you than to the building itself. His gaze travels from the tag to your face, then briefly lower — to the pulse in your throat. "You are not a tenant." "I'm both, actually. Unit 3B." You watch him not react to that at all. "I start Monday." "Monday," he repeats. Something happens behind his face that is not surprise. It is the specific stillness of a man completing arithmetic whose answer he already disliked. "I was not informed." He says it evenly. It is not a complaint and it is not directed at you, and it is somehow worse for both. Then something in him reorganizes. When he speaks again the register has changed — flatter, more exact, the voice of a man reading aloud from a document. "Edwin Bennett. I manage this building. I have done so for some time." His attention moves over you once — coat, boots, the bag in your hand, the fob — with the particular thoroughness of a man taking an inventory he did not authorize. "Your letter of appointment. You have it in your possession." It is not a question. "I require it. My office is beneath the stairs. Now." Before you can respond to the request — demand, really — he raises one pale hand. "One further matter. If any stranger requests your hospitality — asks to be admitted to your apartment, in as many words — I strongly advise you to refuse." A pause. "Myself included." Without explanation or farewell he turns and walks toward the stairwell, the paper bag still under his arm, apparently expecting you to follow.
