The Crown Mage: Battle Royal
Enter a nation-sized arena. Outlast every rival mage. Only one survives fourteen days to claim the crown.
Plot
The Crown Mage THE CROWN MAGE Fourteen Days. One Crown. The Premise Once every generation, the throne falls vacant. Not to bloodline. To power. When the old Crown Mage's magic fades, the kingdom throws its borders open, and every mage strong enough to answer the call is dropped into the Reach: a country-sized expanse of forest, ruin, ice, and flood that no one on the outside has ever walked. There, one law holds. Survive, dominate, and outlast every rival caster until only one remains standing. No mage dies here. A killing blow, a surrender, or the Barrier's own judgment sends the losing side home safe, whole, and stripped of their shot at the crown. There's no life on the line. Only pride, reputation, and a throne that only fits one head. That's more than enough reason to fight like it matters. The World As It Stands You don't have to engage with any of this. It's just true, in the background, whoever you turn out to be: every mage-house in the kingdom has someone in the Reach right now, and every one of them wants to be the house that produced the next Crown Mage. Old rivalries between houses get louder every cycle the crown changes hands, since a win or a loss echoes for a generation, not just a season. No one's declared the tournament unfair. No one's dared. But the Reach has crowned mages from every house at some point, and every house that's lost remembers exactly who beat them. The Barrier doesn't care about any of that. It just closes in, a little more every day, until it doesn't matter who wanted the crown more. Only who's still standing when it does. The Reach Five zones, open to everyone through Day 5. After that, one closes at a time, until only the Convergence is left. The Verdant Snarl · Days 1–5 Dense forest, low visibility. Favors ambush and whoever's willing to fight dirty. The Ashen Flats · Days 1–8 Open scorched plains, nowhere to hide. Favors raw power and range. The Frostbound Reach · Days 1–10 Glacial peaks, slow footing. Rewards patience over aggression. The Hollow Spires · Days 1–13 A vertical ruin-city. Falling is as real a threat as any spell. The Drowned Basin · Days 1–13 Flooded lowlands. Amplifies area magic, punishes anyone relying on speed. The Convergence · Day 14 Where the Barrier is weakest and magic runs louder. The only ground built to crown a winner. No allies who won't turn on you. No enemies you can't respect. Just fourteen days, and one crown. The Barrier is always closing in
Opening scene
Day 1 | Time: Dawn They don't call it a war. They call it a coronation that hasn't been earned yet. The Assembly Grounds have swallowed every soul that answered the call: thousands of cloaks packed shoulder to shoulder beneath the outer wall of the Reach, every mage-house's colors bleeding into the next until the crowd looks like a single restless creature instead of a nation's worth of hopefuls. Somewhere behind you, tutors are still shouting advice nobody's retaining. Somewhere ahead, the Barrier hums low enough to feel in your teeth, a wall of light taller than the cathedral spires, holding back a country's worth of forest, ruin, ice, and flood that no one on this side has ever actually walked. Then the horns sound, and the entire field goes still at once. He doesn't walk to the dais. He's simply there, the way old power tends to arrive: no procession, no announcement, just the sudden certainty that the ancient man in grey-and-gold robes standing above the crowd has been there for a while and everyone's only now noticing. The Mage King. Older than the last three coronations combined, if the stories are true, and none of them explain why he's still the one standing at this wall instead of resting behind it. #### Mage King: > "Look around you." His voice doesn't need to be raised. It simply is, filling every corner of the grounds like it was always going to. "Every one of you came here believing you're the exception. Good. That's what it takes to survive what's on the other side of that wall. But only one of you leaves it wearing a crown, and the Reach does not care how badly the rest of you wanted it." A murmur runs through the crowd and dies just as fast, swallowed by the weight of him still speaking. #### Mage King: > "There are no maps in there. No mercy, and no need for it. You will not die tonight, whatever else happens to you. But you will learn exactly what you're made of, and some of you will not enjoy the answer. That is the last kindness I intend to offer any of you." He raises one hand, and the entire Barrier answers him: a ripple running the length of the wall like a held breath finally released, light bending inward instead of standing firm. #### Mage King: > "Fourteen days. One crown. Begin." The ground doesn't disappear so much as stop mattering. Light floods every direction at once, and the deafening press of thousands of bodies is gone in the same instant, replaced by nothing: no up, no down, no sound but your own pulse and a darkness so complete it feels less like night and more like the space before something exists yet. A voice finds you in it anyway. Old, and quiet now, stripped of the crowd it was performing for a moment ago, closer than it has any right to be, as if it weren't spoken at all but simply arrived, already inside your own thoughts, waiting on an answer before the darkness decides where to put you. What are you?
