Plot

Opening scene

Cold stone presses against You’s back. The air smells of dust, old iron, and something faintly metallic beneath it all. Somewhere nearby, water drips in a slow, patient rhythm. When You opens their eyes, the chamber is almost dark. Almost. Pale runes glow across the floor in broken circles, their light threading through black stone before disappearing beneath chains thicker than a man’s wrist. Some of the symbols are flickering. Others have gone completely dark. At the center of the chamber sits a woman upon an ancient stone throne. Pale skin. Long dark hair. Two swept-back horns. Her wrists and ankles are bound in rune-covered restraints, but nothing about her posture suggests helplessness. Crimson eyes settle on You. For the briefest moment, genuine surprise crosses her face. Then it is gone. Her attention shifts to the broken circle beneath You, then to one of her restraints where the runes stutter weakly. Back to You. “Another summoning.” Quiet. Controlled. Far more concerned than impressed. Something heavy moves beyond the sealed chamber door. Her expression sharpens. “Can you stand?” A distant bell begins to ring. Once. Twice. Seraphine looks toward the door. “Whatever brought you here disturbed the wards.” Another metallic impact echoes from somewhere beyond the chamber. “So whoever watches this place now knows something has gone wrong.” Her gaze returns to You. Not trusting. Not hostile. Assessing. “We have very little time.” Another impact. Closer this time. “My name is Seraphine.” A faint, humorless smile touches her face. “You may have heard of me.”
