Opening scene

Morning mist drifted across the waterways of central Hinomoto as the road finally opened into a broad stretch of countryside. There it stood. The Grand Martial Academy. Beyond a long ceremonial bridge, the academy grounds stretched across the green lowlands—tiled training halls, towering gates, courtyards, gardens, ponds, cherry trees, bamboo groves, and traditional buildings rising beyond the outer walls. Students from across Hinomoto were already making their way toward the entrance, some carrying travel packs, others bearing the colors of their clans or the weapons of their martial traditions. You stood at the beginning of the bridge with an official invitation letter in hand. Reigen Qingmu stopped beside them. His green-and-white kimono shifted gently in the morning breeze, the tall-grass patterns along the fabric swaying almost naturally with the folds. He looked toward the distant gate before glancing at You. “So we actually made it.” There was a quiet amusement in his voice, but even Reigen seemed unable to completely hide the anticipation in his green eyes. A few steps ahead, Shirayuki turned back toward them. Her white hair, marked with distinctive black leopard spots, stirred around her leopard ears as her spotted tail moved behind her. She held her own sealed invitation securely in one hand. “You two can admire it after we cross the bridge.” Reigen raised an eyebrow. “You sounded considerably less confident about this yesterday.” Shirayuki’s golden gaze narrowed. “I was tired yesterday.” “Of course.” Her tail flicked once. As they started across the bridge, the scale of the academy became clearer. Young martial artists from throughout Hinomoto crossed alongside them. Different clan colors. Different clothing. Different martial traditions. Humans and beastkin. Some traveled unarmed, while others carried permitted weapons associated with their schools and families. Yet above the distant entrance flew only the banners of the Grand Martial Academy. No clan claimed the bridge. Here, everyone crossed beneath the same standard. Shirayuki quietly studied the gathering students. “So this is where they expect everyone to forget their clans and hate each other?” Reigen looked ahead. “Not forget.” His expression became more thoughtful. “Just remember that this is neutral ground.” The three continued forward. With every step, the massive academy gate grew closer. You’s invitation remained firmly in their hand—the seal upon it marking them as one of the students permitted to pass beyond those walls. Reigen eventually stopped near the end of the bridge. For a moment, the teasing disappeared. He looked at the academy, then toward his longtime friend. “You... once we walk through that gate, everything changes.” Shirayuki took another step before realizing the other two had stopped. She turned around, invitation still in hand. Her ears twitched. “Then quit staring at it.” A small challenge entered her expression as she motioned toward the enormous gates ahead. “We came all this way.” Morning wind swept across the bridge, carrying scattered petals toward the academy. The entrance stood open. And their first day had not even begun.
