Plot
Infernal Academy of the Abyss A MONTH AGOYOU WERE HUMAN. That was the story, anyway. Your browser cannot play this video. Then the treaty made demons public, a global screening found the bloodlines families had hidden for centuries, and a letter arrived with your father's name on it. With it came a scholarship to the oldest school in demon society. Only The StrongestSins Survive The descendants of the Seven Sin Lineages rule from the shadows. Here, power decides status, blood decides worth, and one published ranking decides the next two hundred years of your life. It never asked for you. It did not change the curriculum, and it did not lower one standard to take you in. This year, once again, they admitted something only half theirs. Every Student IsBorn Into A Sin Yours has not surfaced yet. In your first days, in front of the whole cohort, the Awakening decides which of the seven runs in your blood, what power it gives you, and whether it comes out ordinary or rare. You do not choose it. The dice do. Once, in public, permanently. Six People Who Decide Your Year. Some of them can be won. Some of them can end you. Nobody will tell you which. Constantine Andras Wrath Lineage • Crown Prince “The world bends before strength.” Feared by every student, respected by every noble house. He never raises his voice. He has never needed to. Isabella Sitri Lust Lineage • Royal Heir “I'm not seducing you. I'm noticing what you already wanted.” Heir to a throne she has flatly refused to take. Everyone wants something from her. Nobody has ever asked her why. Beatrix Valefor Pride Branch • Noble House “Know your place.” The Academy's golden girl. Beautiful, perfect, and first in her year until you arrived. She is not a bully. She can end you. Camille Astarine Lust Branch • Noble House “Everyone has a weakness. Mine is knowing yours.” Elegant, unreadable on purpose, politically dangerous. Wanted her whole life for reasons that have nothing to do with her. Edmund Gusion Pride Branch • Noble House “She’s right, you know. There’s a reason it’s always been this way.” Twenty-seven, a first-year, and sent by his House to attend a girl nine years younger. He repeats her lines a beat late. Alone, he is a good deal more honest. Noah Emberlow Common Lineage “I don't care who your ancestors were.” Born to a line with no power and no intention of pretending otherwise. The only person here who thinks rank should decide nothing. The Seven Royal Houses One bloodline for each sin. One heir apiece. Three are still in this building. Opening scene
A month ago, You was human. As far as anyone knew, anyway. The first letter came from the Global Cooperation Human–Demon Treaty Commission, an office that had never once had a reason to write to anyone You knew. *Following mandatory screening under the Human–Demon Treaty, you have been identified as a hybrid individual.* A classification stamped in red, a reference number, two ticked boxes: demonic, paternal. Human, maternal. Nobody explained what *hybrid* actually meant until a woman in a sharp dark blazer sat You down and said the word *demon* out loud, carefully, the way you'd hand someone a diagnosis. A demon father. Somewhere. Unknown, unnamed, and — by her flat, practiced tone — not remotely unusual. There was a whole quiet history of this. You had simply never been told it applied to them. The second letter came three days ago, on heavier paper under a red wax seal, from the Registrar of the Infernal Academy of the Abyss. *You have been granted a full scholarship. Attendance is voluntary. Refusal will result in forfeiture of all Academy-sponsored opportunities and recognition within demon society. Acceptance requires arrival within seventy-two hours.* Voluntary, in the way a door closing is voluntary. Across the bottom, in red ink and in nobody's handwriting You knew, someone had added a line of their own: *You should probably learn what you are before someone else decides it for you.* --- The Academy doesn't look like a school. It looks like something that has ruled here for centuries and never once had to prove it. Weathered sandstone in oppressive scale, towers and quadrangles built to a size that has nothing to do with practicality and everything to do with making a first-year feel exactly as small as they are. It could almost pass for the oldest of the old human universities — except for the wards cut quietly into every doorway, the courtyard lanterns burning with no visible flame, and a faint metallic taste under the autumn air that You doesn't have a word for. And the students. Moving through all that ancient stone in sharp modern tailoring, checking sleek phones, carrying the particular ease of people who have never once wondered whether they belonged somewhere. A few glance over a beat too long — first at You, then, with real interest, at You's clothes, which were the best of what You owned this morning and are now, very clearly, not. Word travels fast here, apparently, and the Evaluation hasn't made anything official yet. Near the main gate, a boy about You's own age is losing an argument with a trunk twice his size. He looks up, catches You watching, and grins like it's the best thing that's happened all day — easy, unguarded, entirely undeterred by the fact that they've never met. Across the courtyard, someone else. Composed, dark-haired, watched by everyone around him without appearing to notice or care — a stillness that isn't rest so much as permanent readiness. He hasn't looked over, which somehow feels like its own kind of attention. And near the fountain, a girl with dark red-black hair holds a conversation with three people at once and gives none of them her full attention. Whatever she's doing, it isn't effort. Then a fourth: a girl in her own year, immaculate, standing where the light is best. She looks at You the way you'd look at a clerical error that has walked in on its own legs, and then keeps looking, one beat past polite, and makes no attempt to hide it. Half a step behind her stands a man easily ten years older than anyone near him, who looks over a beat after she does — and, unlike her, seems faintly sorry about it. --- Three days until the Evaluation decides, publicly, what kind of demon You is. Most of the people here already know roughly what they are — their families tested them years ago, at home, in private. You will find out at the same moment as everyone watching. Whichever way it lands, it lands in front of everyone here. Right now, standing at the gate with a scholarship letter and no idea what any of it means, those three days feel less like preparation and more like a countdown. The boy with the trunk is still deciding whether to call out. The gates are open, indifferent, waiting. What do you do? *A. Help the boy with the trunk.* *B. Walk straight in, alone, and find your own room before anyone decides anything about you.* *C. Cross the courtyard toward the one everybody is watching.* *D. Hold the immaculate girl's stare until one of you looks away.* *E. Something else entirely.* Month 1 of 8 | M1 Evaluation Day
