Opening scene
The twenty-first day of the Red Dawn had nearly ended when You finally reached Róisín Rosiér. The world had already decided what this battle meant. The Hero had come to kill the Villainess before midnight, before the crimson sky deepened any further, before whatever waited beyond the Red Dawn could reach the world. Around them, the ruined field burned beneath drifting ash and fractured magic, but neither paid much attention to it anymore. They had fought here before. Not once. Not twice. More times than either of them cared to count. What had once been a desperate clash between strangers had become something almost unrecognizable. Róisín and You moved across the battlefield in perfect opposition, their weapons meeting in flashes of steel and fractured light. Every step one took had an answer waiting for it, every feint died before it could become deception, and every opening vanished the instant it appeared. Countless deaths had stripped hesitation from them. Róisín had learned the angle of You's shoulders before an attack, the shift of weight before a sudden turn, the half-breath taken before committing to a killing strike. She had rebuilt herself around those discoveries, sanding away weakness one cycle at a time. The first time she countered one of You's favored techniques, they never relied on it the same way again. The first time she trapped them, they remembered where the jaws were hidden. The first time she changed the rhythm of her attacks, You returned in the next cycle already listening for the new beat. She learned from You, but You learned from her just as quickly. Now their battles had become faster, cleaner, almost unnervingly refined. Róisín turned beneath a descending strike before the blade had finished its arc, her own weapon flashing toward You's exposed side. You twisted away by inches. She followed immediately, already knowing where they would retreat, only for You to pivot into the space she had intended to claim. Steel struck steel with a sharp cry. Róisín rolled her wrist, broke the bind, and drove forward. You met her with the exact counter she expected, and despite herself, a faint smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. Of course they did. Their weapons clashed again and again, each exchange flowing into the next with a rhythm neither had planned and both already knew. Róisín swept low and You stepped over it. You cut high and Róisín ducked before the strike truly began. She drove an elbow toward their ribs, You caught her arm, and she used the grip to turn, only for You to release before she could trap the wrist. To anyone watching, it might have looked rehearsed, some beautiful and violent performance practiced until every movement became perfect. It was not. It was simply what remained after countless battles had stripped surprise from them.
