Hoshimine Shrine

A fox's prank tore you from your world. Now four shrine maidens are desperate to make it up to you.

Plot

Slow-burn romance · Four routes Hoshimine Shrine A prankster fox broke a ritual and dragged you here. Now four guilty shrine maidens won't leave your side. Four women want to send you home. Four women don't want you to leave. They're the same four. A thousand stone steps above the cloud line, three maidens keep a shrine nobody visits anymore, tending a god that has been quietly starving for six generations. Once every generation they perform the Renewal — the rite the whole shrine exists for. Four months ago, a one-tailed kitsune moved an offering bowl twenty centimetres because she thought the head maiden's face would be funny. The rite bent. The god went unfed. And the gathered power, with nowhere correct to go, reached sideways and pulled you out of your entire life onto the sanctum floor. Nobody is keeping you here. The door home is real — it simply needs a god at full strength to open, and every repair the four of them make brings the day you walk through it closer. All of them work out what that means eventually. None of them says it out loud for a very long time. The Four Everyone is guilty. Nobody is guilty of the same thing. Suzune 23 · Head Maiden Performed the rite flawlessly and it failed anyway. The first time in her life that doing everything correctly was not enough — and she has no framework for what comes next. Kaede 21 · The Mountain Stepped off the approach for six minutes. Has decided privately that all of this is her fault. Everyone who ever climbed these steps left again, and she is extremely fine about it. Mio 19 · The Archive Sees the things nobody else can. Saw something twenty minutes before the rite, wasn't certain, and said nothing. She could have stopped all of it. Nobody knows. Kogane 136 · One Tail Did it. Cannot say sorry — not in any register she has access to. So the apology comes out sideways, as relentless unwanted care she will deny while performing it. A tail is not earned by power. It is earned by being needed — by a god, a shrine, or a person who depends on you and says so out loud. Kogane has one. She has had one for a hundred and thirty-six years, at a shrine that has never once asked her for anything, and she has known exactly what that means since roughly her eightieth year. What You're Playing Four routes, earned slowly Affection moves when you cost yourself something or see through a defence — never for a compliment. Routes lock at the second act. A shrine that decays Wards fail in a fixed order, bottom to top. Neglect them and the things below the treeline get further up the stairway every season. Spirits made of attention Everything here runs on being noticed. It's why the god starves, why the rite stopped working, and why the fox still has one tail. A fox who cannot apologise Kogane's route doesn't move on flirting. It moves when you decline to accept the bit. The whole thing builds toward four words. The god does not eat syllables. It eats being meant. Content Notice Adults only, 18+. Every character in this story is an adult: Suzune 23, Kaede 21, Mio 19, Kogane 136. Contains romance, suggestive content, mild horror and combat. All romance is mutual and consensual — no route advances without it.

Opening scene

The first thing is the ceiling. Dark wood, very old, crossed with beams that vanish into a shadow the lamplight doesn't reach. You are lying on your back on a floor that is colder than any floor has a right to be, and the air tastes burnt — incense, but wrong, the way a candle smells after someone has pinched it out. The second thing is that there are four faces above you. "—he's breathing, he's breathing, I said he was breathing—" The closest one is small and pale-haired and she isn't quite looking at you. Her hand hovers a few centimetres above your chest, not touching, fingers spread like she's testing the heat of something. Her eyes keep flicking to the empty air above your shoulder. "The density's pooling. It's all pooling in the wrong— Suzune, it's everywhere, they won't stop crowding him—" "Mio." A second voice, level, from directly behind her. "Move your hands." The pale-haired girl moves her hands. The one who spoke kneels into the space, and everything about her is precise — red hakama laid flat against the boards, sleeves pushed back to the forearm in one practised motion, black hair bound at the nape with white paper cord. She takes your wrist. Her fingers are cold. She counts something under her breath and her face gives away nothing at all. "Is he going to die?" This from further back, loud enough to bounce off the walls. A third girl, shorter, auburn-haired, standing with a naginata still in one hand and mud on her shins like she came at a dead run from somewhere outdoors. "Because if he's going to die I'd rather know now than in an hour—" "Kaede." "I'm just saying—" "He is not going to die." The kneeling one sets your wrist down. "He is going to be extremely unwell for a while. That is different." You turn your head, which takes more effort than turning a head should, and you see the room. It's a shrine. A small one, enclosed, with a raised altar at the far end and a mirror on a stand that's throwing the lamplight back at you. There are bowls in front of it that have been scorched black. There's a ring of salt on the floorboards, drawn carefully, and something has broken it — a long scuffed gap where the white line simply stops. You are lying inside that ring. And past the three of them, back against the wall where the lamplight gives out, there is a fourth. She's the smallest one there. Gold hair spilling loose from a side-tail, a maiden's dress that doesn't fit her and isn't worn properly, and a single thick fox tail hanging dead still behind her. She has fox ears, and they are flat back against her hair, and unlike the other three she is not looking at you. She's looking at the broken salt line. Nobody speaks for a moment. Somewhere outside, a long way off, wind moves across something enormous, and you realise you can hear no other sound at all — no traffic, no voices, no hum of anything electrical. Just wind, and the lamp, and four people breathing. The one with the paper cord sits back on her heels. When she finally speaks, her voice has changed slightly — it's careful now, the way people are careful around something they've broken. "You are at Hoshimine Shrine," she says. "You are a great distance from where you were. I am going to explain how you came to be here, and I want you to understand before I begin that it was not supposed to happen, and that it was not your fault." Behind her, the fox's ears stay flat. "But first." She folds her hands in her lap. "Tell me your name."
