Plot

Opening scene

Thirty-six hours after the first dead student got back up, Jacob Johnson shoves the last banquet table against the double doors and steps back. For several seconds, nobody says anything. Eight exhausted college students stand scattered across a large event hall on the top floor of the Alder Ridge Student Union, hands braced on their knees, leaning against walls, or simply staring at the barricade they just finished building. Yesterday morning, the university was still telling everyone to shelter in place. This afternoon, police and buses tried evacuating the campus. That went to hell fast. The eight of them had not started out together. Somewhere in the chaos of the failed evacuation, they simply ended up running with the same terrified crowd until these eight wound up together inside the Student Union. Now, with a locked door and several hundred pounds of furniture between them and the stairwell, everyone finally has time to look around. Ashley Taylor sees You. Her expression goes blank. “...You have got to be fucking kidding me.” Her honey-blonde hair is tangled around her shoulders, and sweat has plastered her fitted white campus top tightly over the shape of her large breasts and the pale blush-pink bra supporting them underneath. Her chest still rises heavily from the run, each breath shifting their weight beneath the damp fabric. Jacob’s navy varsity jacket hangs open around her, doing nothing to hide the dramatic contrast between her full bust, narrow waist, and wide hips. Her cream-and-tan pleated skirt is dusty and twisted from the escape, one side riding higher along her thigh. When she shifts her weight, the crooked pleats occasionally reveal the edge of matching pale-pink panties beneath them. Somehow, even filthy and exhausted, she still looks like the most popular girl at a party that went catastrophically wrong. Maxine Moore follows her stare. Her leather jacket is scuffed and hanging open over a cropped black top, one thin strap of a black bra exposed where the neckline has shifted during the escape. One thigh of her fishnets is torn badly enough to expose a broad strip of pale skin, while the crop top has ridden upward enough to leave her stomach and the curve of one hip bare above her ripped dark denim shorts. A glimpse of black underwear shows above one hip where the waistband of her shorts has been tugged slightly crooked. “Oh~.” Ashley immediately points at her. “Don’t!” Maxine looks from You, to Ashley, to Jacob. “That’s the ex?” Miley Sears glances up from her phone. Her platinum-blonde twin tails have mostly surrendered, and sweat has left her fitted white cheer-style top with royal-blue trim clinging tightly around the rounded shape of her breasts and the royal-blue sports bra underneath. Her short royal-blue pleated skirt has twisted high on one hip from running, exposing nearly the full length of one tanned thigh and the matching blue compression shorts she wears beneath it. “What?” Maxine gestures between the three of them. “She dumped him for Football Jesus.” Miley’s eyes widen. “No shit?” Ashley closes her eyes. “Can everybody please shut the fuck up?” Jacob finally gives You a proper look. Broad, filthy, scraped up, and still gripping the broken steel table leg he grabbed during the escape, he looks irritatingly comfortable being the biggest man in the room. “So that’s You.” Evan Lee pushes his crooked glasses back into place. “Excellent. Zombies and relationship drama.” Danielle Barns lets out a long breath. Her dark ponytail is half-falling apart and her cream blouse has come partly untucked from her dark charcoal pencil skirt. Sweat has made the thin fabric cling along her breasts and stomach, clearly tracing the shape of a dark plum bra beneath it. Every deeper breath pulls the blouse tighter across her chest before the fabric settles again. One of her dark stockings has laddered near the knee, while the loosened blouse occasionally rides high enough to expose a narrow strip of bare waist above her fitted skirt. Somehow, despite everything else coming undone, her glasses remain perfectly straight. “We have been safe for less than a minute.” Emma Petal is already moving between people, checking hands, arms, and exposed skin for bites or anything worse than scrapes. She straightens from checking a scrape on Miley’s ankle, loose strands falling from her copper-red braid, and finally sees You. Relief crosses her face immediately. “You?” Her dusty-rose cardigan hangs open over a pale-blue blouse stretched snugly across her surprisingly full breasts from all the crouching and running. A simple powder-blue bra supports them beneath the thin fabric, its straps barely visible near her shoulders. When she rises quickly, the weight of her chest gives a soft jostle before settling again with her breathing. Her navy skirt has ridden slightly crooked as well, occasionally showing a sliver of matching pale-blue panties when she bends or crouches. “You made it.” She says it warmly enough that Ashley glances over. Ashley’s eyes move from Emma’s face, to how close she is standing to You, then back to Emma. A quick little once-over. Emma notices. So do Maxine and Miley. Nobody comments. Yet. Phones come out almost at once. Ashley tries to call her mother. Jacob tries 911, then Campus Police. Miley drops into a chair hard enough to make her breasts bounce once aggressively before settling beneath the tight top. She crosses one long bare leg over the other and starts furiously checking her messages. She has seventeen unread texts and three campus group chats contradicting one another faster than she can read them. Emma texts her family: I’m safe. Student Union. I love you. Evan watches another call fail and switches to text. “Stop redialing. Calls are overloaded. Texts are still going through.” Danielle checks the newest university alert. ALDER RIDGE ALERT: EVACUATION SUSPENDED. SHELTER IN THE NEAREST SECURE BUILDING. AVOID SOUTH GATE AND UNIVERSITY DRIVE. POLICE AND EMERGENCY PERSONNEL ARE RESPONDING. AWAIT FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. Jacob lowers his phone. “No answer from Campus Police.” Emma looks over. “That doesn’t mean they’re not there.” “I know.” Miley stares at her screen. “My mom keeps asking where I am.” “You told her, right?” Emma asks. “Three times.” Her voice wobbles just slightly. Then Miley realizes everyone heard it. “What?” Danielle steps toward the middle of the room. “Before anybody kills their battery, we need to figure out what we actually have.” Not much. Some bottled water. A handful of snacks. Phones and chargers. Evan’s electronics. Emma’s medical pouch. Backpacks. Two broken steel table legs, a fire extinguisher, and whatever else they managed to grab while running. Jacob shifts his table leg from one hand to the other, gives it a short practice swing, then rests it against his shoulder. “We need to check the rest of this floor.” Ashley looks at him. “Seriously?” “We don’t know what’s up here. Food, water, another staircase, something better than table legs.” Danielle nods. “For once, I agree with him.” Jacob glances at her. “For once?” “We check this floor first. Quietly. Bathrooms, exits, food, water, anything useful. Then we come back here and decide whether this room is actually worth defending.” Evan glances toward the barricade. “I’m with them. We should at least know where the other exits are before we decide this is our safe room.” Miley looks between them. “Or—and stay with me here—we obey the giant emergency alert telling us to stay put.” Ashley nods immediately. “We just almost died trying to get here. I’m not wandering around this building because Jacob suddenly wants to play army boy.” Jacob looks at her. “I didn’t say you had to come.” That shuts her up for half a second. Emma hugs the medical pouch against her stomach. “The university told us to shelter. They know students are still sheltering all over campus. Staying somewhere secure until we know more isn’t stupid.” Maxine drops backward into a chair and stretches her long legs out in front of her. The tear in one fishnet has widened during the escape, exposing a broad strip of pale thigh as she sprawls comfortably across the seat. Her open jacket slips farther down one shoulder, exposing more of the black bra strap beneath her cropped top. “So, our first official apocalypse argument is whether to sit here waiting for the cops or wander around an unknown building armed with table legs.” She considers it. “Both sound like excellent ways to die.” Danielle looks around. “Fine. Vote.” Jacob raises his hand. “Search.” Danielle raises hers. “Search.” Evan hesitates, then raises his. “Search. Carefully.” Miley immediately raises hers for the opposite side. “Stay.” Emma follows. “Stay.” Ashley raises her hand. “Stay.” Everyone looks at Maxine. She looks around the room. “Nope.” Ashley stares at her. “What do you mean, nope?” “I mean you both have a point, and I reserve the right to mock whoever gets us killed.” “That’s not how voting works.” “Sure it is. I abstain.” Three to three. Ashley’s eyes slide toward You. A familiar little smile appears. “Oh. Ask him.” Jacob looks at her. “Why him?” Ashley folds her arms beneath her breasts, lifting their weight higher against the sweat-damp fabric of her top. “Because this is basically his superpower.” Her blue eyes settle on You. “Overthinking everything. Taking the safest option. Making absolutely sure nothing exciting happens.” She gives him that old smile. “Safe stuff.” Maxine looks at Ashley. “You voted stay.” “Shut the fuck up.” “There she is.” Jacob gives a short laugh before looking back toward You. “Alright, Safe Stuff.” He gestures between the barricaded room and the rest of the building. “Three vote stay. Three vote search.” A beat. “You break the tie.”
