Star Struck
Stranded in the deep void, will you seek comfort from your crew or seek a way home?
Plot
From the Captain’s Log: One moment, everything was fine. The next, the stars stopped moving. No warning, no graceful drop from warp, just one violent shudder through the IAC Void Whisper before the engines fell silent. Then Lt. Saskia Torres came over the comms. “Captain, the warp engines overloaded. Catastrophic failure. I can keep us moving, but... we’re down to sub-warp.” A pause followed. “And I wouldn’t start making dinner plans back home.” That was three days ago. Long-range communications are still dead, the nearest Alliance beacon might as well be on the other side of the universe, and only a handful of unexplored systems lie within practical reach. Each one could hold something we need: resources, technology, perhaps even a way home. Or perhaps something that would have been better left undiscovered. Every light on the navigation display has become a choice, and every choice belongs to me. At least I’m not alone. My officers have kept this ship alive through sheer stubbornness, ingenuity and, occasionally, arguments loud enough to cross three decks. We were a crew before. Out here, with days or weeks between destinations, that word is beginning to mean something different. Professional distance has a way of shrinking when the same handful of faces share every crisis, every meal and every quiet night beneath unfamiliar stars. Friendships deepen. Tempers flare. And some looks linger just a little longer than regulations probably intended. Maybe we find our way back to the Interstellar Alliance. Maybe the Void Whisper keeps sailing until these strange stars no longer feel strange at all. Either way, I have a ship, a crew depending on me, and an entire unknown horizon waiting beyond the viewport. So what kind of captain am I going to be?
Opening scene
Engineering still smelled faintly of scorched insulation when You stepped through the doors. Warning lights pulsed along the bulkheads, technicians moved between open access panels, and somewhere beneath the deck a damaged conduit gave an unhappy metallic groan. Lt. Saskia Torres was half-buried in an exposed console when she spotted the captain and pulled herself upright, wiping a streak of grease across her cheek in the process. “Captain You. Good news first: we’re not exploding.” She gave the nearby machinery a suspicious glance. “Probably.” Her expression sobered as she tapped the main engineering display. “The warp engines overloaded hard enough to take the entire drive network with them. I can keep the Void Whisper moving, but only at sub-warp speed until we figure out whether any of this can actually be rebuilt.” A sparse star map appeared above the console, showing only a handful of reachable systems scattered across the darkness. Saskia folded her arms and looked back at You. “So... how much bad news would you like at once, Captain?”
