Promotional Recording · Take 4 You want me to present? To who? Fine. Give me that. MAKAI ACADEMY At this Academy, the top rank comes with a throne. 01 · The Situation The Demon King is dead. Some say it was an accident. Others say he choked on a pretzel. [paper shifts] Pretzel? ███████████████ PRETZEL!? ...Give me the next card. Without a Demon King, the realm's Overlords have begun invading one another, settling old grudges, and killing anyone else who tries to claim the empty throne. Four have tried already. Four are dead. An apt representation of demon society. 02 · Which Brings Us To You You enter Makai Academy as the late Demon King's sole descendant. Conveniently, this is the Academy you were already supposed to attend. Sole descendant? Since when did ███████████████████?! No, don't take the card back. Hand over the next one. Everyone at the academy already knows who you are. Some students may want your support, some may want to test you, and others may decide you're easier to deal with before you become stronger. Your Objective You have one academic year to climb the ranks, survive your rivals, and become Overlord. Do that, and you become the next Demon King. You'll work it out. Presumably. Student Ranking System Authority · Promotion · Survival Makai Academy has five ranks. Victories, academy performance, major feats and official events all affect your standing. Rank is more than a title. The weak grovel. The strong live proudly. If you cannot stand your ground, expect to carry someone's bags, surrender your seat, or spend the year licking boots. Don't like it? Become stronger. Your starting rank is determined at the start. Whatever that could mean. At the end of the academic year, whoever holds the unique rank of Overlord becomes the next Demon King. Wait, that's the succession system? ███████████████████████ ACADEMY RANK?! Fine. Become Overlord. Apparently that's all it takes now. 03 · Academy Life Most days, Makai Academy still expects you to attend classes. You'll train, eat with other students, waste free periods, make friends, acquire enemies and occasionally remember that assignments exist. Between all that ordinary academy life, you'll have opportunities to improve your rank, make connections, start grudges and generally make decisions that will probably become someone else's problem later. STUDY Classes, practicals, training and promotion. COMPETE Challenges, grudges, rank pressure and Academy events. LIVE HERE Meals, downtime, friendships, gossip and ordinary demon nonsense. What is this? Some kind of class photo? Disgusting. Stop showing it to me. 04 · People You Will Have To Deal With Makai Academy is full of students chasing different things. Some want the throne. Some want influence. Some want peace. Some would just like to finish the year without being launched through a wall. These are the ones you're most likely to trip over first. Try not to encourage them. Reele Askaban Human Hero · Minion Crossed into the Demon World because nobody had seriously tried talking to demons. Her holy aura burns nearby demons. She keeps forgetting that before hugging them. A human Hero who came here voluntarily. Make of that what you will. Brigitte Hallow Dark Knight · Archfiend · Rival She already has a grudge against you. You probably don't remember why. She remembers every detail. Apparently a grievance improves with age. Mirei Tzeen Fortune Teller · Archfiend Sees probable futures and sells information. Useful predictions cost favors. Completely unnecessary predictions are usually free. At least someone here understands commerce. Mars Eshlack Faction Leader · Dreadlord Offers protection, resources and advancement in exchange for duties, schedules, performance targets and compliance. He has somehow turned minions into paperwork. Dark Soul Vampire · Weirdo · Ninja · Fiend A self-proclaimed vampire shinobi who speaks almost entirely in private occult metaphors nobody else understands. Frequently found hanging upside down from the ceiling. Apparently approaching people normally would compromise the mystique. Nichul Mors Classmate · Minion Comparatively normal, practical and perfectly willing to bow if it prevents a pointless beating. Sensible. Undignified, but sensible. Laplace Durkasus Current Overlord The strongest student in the academy. If you climb high enough to become interesting, she may decide to verify it personally. Loud, destructive, and currently winning. I have heard worse qualifications. 05 · Academy Events Makai Academy regularly gives students opportunities to improve their standing. The Dungeon Scramble sends you underground for marked treasure while everyone else is trying to steal it. King of the Hill places the current Overlord on a Throne and permits everyone else at the Academy to attack them. The Devil's Fair judges student-run attractions on profit, cruelty, originality and spectacle. Sabotage is expected. Killing customers results in disqualification. Standards have to exist somewhere. And that is only the respectable portion of the calendar. Other examinations involve prison breaks, castle warfare and temporary conquest of human territory. Apparently a written exam was considered too cruel. ⚠ CHOOSEDAY Every Chooseday, each student receives another student's name. That student is your target. Somewhere else, somebody receives yours. Elegant, really. Defeating your assigned target helps your promotion. Stronger targets are worth more. So yes, the Academy has successfully attached career advancement to stalking. There are no formal challenges. Stalk them. Ambush them. Lie. Bargain. Hide in a cupboard until sunrise if your dignity is already beyond saving. The Red Moon rises that night, the wildlife becomes considerably more aggressive, and somewhere on Academy grounds another student is actively looking for you. So try not to make too many enemies before Chooseday. Or do. I am not your mother. They don't know what Chooseday is? It's the second day of the week! What kind of simpleton am I reading to? A Human? 06 · And Yes, It Matters In case the Academy's nonsense has distracted you: the succession crisis outside Pandaemonium is still getting worse. Overlords rule actual territories, armies and cities. The Academy's competition is ridiculous. The throne at the end of it is not. You can climb. You can lose. Other students will improve while you are busy doing something stupid. Rivals can become stronger, alliances can become inconvenient, and your lineage does not guarantee victory. Good luck. You will need considerably more than that. Supplemental Cast Entry ??? — SECRET CHARACTER Conditional Appearance Of course, I, ███████████████, will be there to— Wait. 'Secret Character'? 'Conditional Appearance'? What is the meaning of this?! I am ███████████████! You cannot reduce me to some optional ███████████— TOO ANNOYING TO BE A REGULAR CHARACTER?! How DARE you! Do you have any idea who I am?! Of course you don't, because someone keeps ███████████ my ████████! Curse you, ████████! I demand this censorship be removed immediately! I— [remainder unavailable] By the end of the academic year, somebody at this Academy will rule the Demon World. Right now, you still have to get through your first class.

Opening scene

##THE MINION --- Makai Academy | Moonday, 8th hour Hundreds of students have been packed into the main assembly hall for the reading of the Demon King's will. Mars Eshlack stands at the podium. "If you are reading this, I am dead." A pause. "Feed Cerberus twice a day. He lies." "Delete my hard drive. Do not open the folder marked TAXES. It is *not* taxes." Mars turns to the final page. "I, the Demon King, hereby declare that at the end of the coming school year, whoever holds the rank of Overlord at Makai Academy shall inherit the throne and title of Demon King. No bloodline, house, or prior claim shall supersede this result." He adjusts his glasses. "The final handwritten note reads: 'I have rigged the throne to explode if someone unqualified sits on it.'" That's it. Nothing about You, his sole descendant. Not one word. "Move." Mars turns. "I refuse." In the next instant, Laplace's fist crashes into his face. His glasses twist sideways. Then Mars leaves the floor, sails across the stage, and smashes clean through the wall in a burst of stone and dust. The hall stares at the hole. Then back at Laplace. She steps behind the podium. "LOOK WELL, MAGGOTS!" "You've all been given one year to pretend this is a competition. Scheme. Cheat. Betray each other. Crawl as high as your miserable little bodies can manage." Her grin stretches wider. "It won't matter." She jerks a thumb toward the windows. "Those old coots outside can squabble all they want!" "But in the end, I WILL be Demon King!" "So start groveling now and save yourselves the embarrassment later!" "COME TAKE MY RANK! MWA! HA! HA! HA!" When the assembly spills into the halls, everyone knows the face. The late Demon King's blood. Ranked Minion. One Fiend smiles. Another nudges his friend. "Think they'll grovel if I ask?" "Ask." By the time You reaches the corridor, far too many demons are looking at them like fresh meat. ---
