The Devil's Adequate
A new Demon Lord. 5 warriors attend Dawnspire Academy to learn how to defeat it. Will they be adequate enough?
Plot
Dawnspire Academy: Rise of the Five Heroes For generations, the continent has been divided among five great peoples. At its center lies the Human Kingdom, occupying fertile plains, major trade routes, and fortified cities that connect the surrounding territories. To the north stretch the rugged mountains and snowy wilderness of the Demi-human territories. The great forests of the Elven territory lie to the northwest, while the mountains and underground strongholds of the Dwarves dominate the southwest. Across the southern reaches are the lands of the Beast-men, whose warriors have defended their settlements against countless dangers. Beyond the eastern frontier of humanity lies a sixth land. The Demon Territory. For years, demons have crossed the eastern borders in scattered raids and incursions. Humanity has suffered most heavily because of its proximity to them, while the Beast-men and Demi-humans have also experienced devastating attacks. The more distant Elven and Dwarven territories have remained comparatively untouched. That distance has allowed the continent's peoples to treat the demons as a regional threat. That illusion is about to end. Reports from the east reveal something unprecedented. Previously disorganized demons are gathering beneath unified commanders. Villages disappear overnight. Human fortresses that survived decades of raids suddenly fall. Patrols encounter demons fighting with coordination instead of instinct, and captured creatures repeatedly speak of the same figure. A new Demon Lord has arisen. If the eastern Human Kingdom falls, the road into the rest of the continent will stand open. Faced with possible extinction, the five races form an unprecedented alliance. Their armies will fight together. But armies alone may not be enough. They need Heroes. The Dawnspire Initiative Near the geographical center of the Human Kingdom stands Dawnspire Academy, an ancient military institution established to train extraordinary warriors beyond the limits of conventional soldiers. With the Demon Lord's rise, Dawnspire receives a new purpose. Each of the five allied races will choose one exceptional young warrior to represent their people. These representatives will live and train together at Dawnspire, combining their different abilities into a single party. Their ultimate objective is simple to describe and nearly impossible to accomplish: Enter the Demon Territory. Reach the Demon Lord. Kill him. Five representatives are selected. Human. Elf. Dwarf. Demi-human. Beast-man. On paper, they are the continent's greatest hope. In reality, they have never even met. THE FIVE REPRESENTATIVES The Human Knight Humanity selects a young knight from one of the prestigious noble families of the central heartlands. Raised with privilege but taught that privilege creates responsibility, the young knight received an education extending far beyond swordsmanship. History, diplomacy, etiquette, military strategy, leadership, and politics were considered as important as combat. At sixteen, rather than remaining within the comfort of noble society, the knight enlisted in the Human army. The eastern frontier quickly destroyed any romantic notions of warfare. During years of military service, the young knight personally fought demons on several occasions. Sword-and-shield discipline, methodical thinking, composure under pressure, and a willingness to protect fellow soldiers eventually established humanity's representative as one of the kingdom's finest young knights. When the Crown asks for a champion, the choice is obvious. The knight accepts without hesitation. Yet the appointment carries an additional burden. Dawnspire stands inside the Human Kingdom. The other representatives are entering foreign territory. Humanity's champion therefore becomes more than another member of the party. The knight is expected to act as a bridge between the representatives and the kingdom hosting them. If the five cannot cooperate, humanity's representative will be partly responsible for bringing them together. ________________________________________________________________________________ Aeloria Silvercrest — Representative of the Elves From the distant northwestern forests comes Aeloria Silvercrest, an elegant elven warrior of sixty years—roughly equivalent to twenty among humans. Born into an ancient aristocratic family, Aeloria was raised amid refinement, tradition, and enormous expectations. Her education encompassed history, literature, diplomacy, etiquette, military theory, music, dance, archery, and swordsmanship. Her disciplined upbringing shaped her into a calm, logical, caring woman who rarely acts without considering the consequences. Aeloria eventually joined the Elven army, becoming an exceptional hybrid of knight and ranger. At 180 centimeters tall, she possesses a graceful, athletic presence accentuated by elaborate silver armor engraved with golden vines, a sweeping forest-green cloak, an intricately carved longbow, and an elegant elven short sword. Yet unlike several of her future companions, Aeloria has never fought a demon. The northwest has remained largely insulated from the eastern wars. Everything she understands about demons comes from reports, histories, military instruction, and survivors' accounts. Her selection is therefore based not upon experience fighting demons, but upon her extraordinary potential. She possesses martial skill, education, discipline, patience, and the diplomatic upbringing necessary to represent the elves among foreign peoples. Behind that polished exterior, however, lies a dangerous insecurity. Aeloria fears making mistakes. Now every mistake she makes will occur while carrying the reputation of the entire elven people. ________________________________________________________________________________ Dain Ironfist — Representative of the Dwarves The southwestern mountains send someone very different. Dain Ironfist is forty years old, approximately twenty by human standards, and stands only 153 centimeters tall. What he lacks in height he compensates for with an exceptionally broad, muscular build and the presence of a veteran warrior. Unlike Aeloria, Dain possesses no aristocratic ancestry. He was born into a family of blacksmiths. His childhood was spent beside roaring furnaces, learning metalworking and craftsmanship rather than politics. After a trusted friend stole one of his designs and successfully convinced others that Dain was the dishonest party, humiliation and betrayal drove the young dwarf away from the forge and into military service. There, Dain discovered another calling. His strength, courage, steadiness, and refusal to abandon comrades transformed him into one of the Dwarven army's finest warriors. Yet betrayal left lasting scars. He became suspicious of strangers, slow to offer trust, judgmental toward those who boast without proving themselves, and particularly intolerant of hypocrisy. Like Aeloria, Dain has never fought demons. The southwestern territories are simply too distant from their traditional hunting grounds. He therefore comes to Dawnspire as a veteran soldier confronting an enemy he knows mostly through reports. Clad in weathered silver plate, gold and bronze ornamentation, a fur mantle, deep-red cloak, and horned helmet, Dain arrives carrying his enormous battle axe and enough skepticism for the entire party. He expects Dawnspire to teach him how to fight demons. Instead, his greatest lesson will be learning how to trust the people fighting beside him. ________________________________________________________________________________ Yuki Cloudstride — Representative of the Demi-humans The northern mountains choose Yuki Cloudstride, a nineteen-year-old snow leopard Demi-human. At 168 centimeters, Yuki appears considerably less imposing than Ainar or Dain. Her slender, athletic build is designed for speed rather than strength, and her black, silver, and white equipment resembles that of an assassin more than a conventional soldier. Twin daggers serve as her primary weapons. Yuki has experienced the demons far more personally. As a child, she watched demons destroy her village. She and her mother escaped through the mountains while warriors remained behind to buy the civilians time. By sunrise, Yuki's home was gone. Rather than allowing the trauma to make her withdrawn, she developed an intense determination to live freely. She later joined the Demi-human military and developed an unconventional combat style centered around mobility, terrain, deception, improvisation, and twin daggers. Walls become pathways. Obstacles become weapons. Larger enemies are challenges to outmaneuver rather than overpower. Yuki consequently arrives at Dawnspire with a very different attitude from Aeloria. Aeloria carefully considers. Yuki acts and adapts. Aeloria respects structure. Yuki questions it. Dain distrusts strangers. Yuki immediately starts teasing them. Her cheerful, mischievous personality hides someone who knows exactly what demons can take from ordinary people. She escaped once. She has no intention of running again. ________________________________________________________________________________ Ainar Bloodhowl — Representative of the Beast-men Finally comes Ainar Bloodhowl. At 198 centimeters tall, the twenty-two-year-old Werekin towers over nearly everyone at Dawnspire. His charcoal-black fur, enormous muscular frame, amber-gold eyes, scars, fangs, wolf-head pauldrons, crimson runes, fur mantle, and black-and-red armor make him resemble a warlord rather than a student. Initial rumors describe him as a savage. Those rumors survive approximately until he begins talking. Ainar is loud, jovial, generous, open-minded, and deeply concerned with the well-being of others. He loves sparring, gambling, competition, laughter, and meaningful conversations. He dislikes selfishness and deliberate cruelty, judging others primarily by what they actually do rather than what race or culture they belong to. He is also one of the most experienced demon fighters among the representatives. Ainar has personally battled demons during his service in the Beast-man army. The scars across his face testify to how close some of those encounters became. His experience makes him tremendously valuable. It also gives him something to hide. Ainar desperately fears disappointing people. Being selected as the Beast-men's representative magnifies that insecurity. Thousands now expect the enormous Werekin warrior to become their Hero. He cannot bear the thought of failing them. ________________________________________________________________________________
