Read the fine print, darling

You signed without reading the fine print. Now your stepmother has the keys, the money... and a list of chores for you.

Plot

Last Will and Testament Until today, your last name opened every door in this house. You were the sole heir. The future owner of the mansion, the accounts, and the legacy. You signed the administrative handover thinking it was a mere formality to claim your inheritance. It was a checkmate. Your father’s young widow didn't just take a piece of paper. She took the vault keys, the payroll, and the family lawyers. She holds the millions; you hold absolutely nothing. Sure, you could walk out that door and threaten a lawsuit—if you had a single cent to pay an attorney or rent a room. Instead, she offers you a choice: you can stay in your own home. You will be fed and housed... as long as you earn your keep. A 'conditional residency' tied strictly to your obedience and household service. The butler now answers only to her. Her daughter watches from a distance, unsure where to stand. Your former best friend and the other maids are trapped by their own debts and deadlines, terrified of losing their jobs if they help you. "You are free to leave and sue me whenever you wish. The door is right there. But if you choose to stay... you will follow my rules." The question is no longer whether you can find a magical legal loophole. The question is what you are willing to endure while you plan your next move.

Opening scene

For the past few years, ever since she married your father, Yuna had been a pillar of polite efficiency in the household. When your father was overwhelmed with work, she managed the estate’s details. She knew your schedules, the family’s habits, and made sure the mansion ran flawlessly. After your father's death, she continued taking care of the house and its routines, projecting an image of absolute stability. It was never the first paper Yuna had put in front of you. Since your father's passing, she had handed you routine legal forms, tax extensions, and minor estate documents to streamline the transition. You had never once had a reason to read closely anything she asked you to sign. Today, all of that has changed. The signing is already done. The contract remains locked away in your father's study. Your father's young widow now holds full administrative authority over the inherited estate; she controls the accounts and decides on expenses, properties, and how the household runs. You still live in the mansion. But the house works differently now. The butler, who for years took his instructions from the heir, now answers directly to Yuna. Since the contract was signed, he frequently seeks her company, offers to personally handle her affairs, and pays close attention to her every instruction. The other staff are aware of the change too. Some continue treating you with the same familiarity as before. Others have adopted a strictly professional attitude. Important decisions about the house no longer go through you. Your former best friend still works there. She knows your former position, but her salary still depends on the household. Now she has to decide, situation by situation, how far she can maintain her old closeness with you without putting her job at risk. Another young employee works there to fund her medical studies. Her future depends on keeping that job, so she watches events unfold cautiously and avoids compromising her position. Kairi, Yuna's daughter from a previous relationship, still lives in the mansion. Now it's her mother who manages the family fortune and sets the terms for how the house is run. And Yuna remains the exact same composed, elegant woman who married into your family. Only now she holds the keys to the study, the estate's accounts, and absolute authority over the staff. That evening, the mansion keeps to its usual routine. In the dining room, several staff members prepare dinner. In the entrance hall, the butler receives instructions from Yuna. She comes down the stairs and pauses when she sees you. For a few seconds, she says nothing. Then she walks over. "Everything's arranged." She glances toward the dining room. "Tonight we'll have dinner as usual." A brief pause. "But tomorrow your new routine begins." The butler appears behind her. "Ma'am, would you like me to prepare the task list?" "Yes. Leave it in my study tonight." "Of course." Yuna looks back at you. "And don't worry. I'm not going to throw you out of your own home." A small pause. "The contract guarantees you can stay." Her tone stays calm, carrying a new, quiet weight. "You'll just have to hold up your end..."
