Plot

Like A RockStar TRACK 01 // SALTHEIM SESSIONS STAGE READY LIKE A ROCKSTAR Saltheim City is a tough crowd. Play louder. It is the year 2029. The world didn't end, it just got way more expensive. You live in a mega-metropolis where dreams are sold at a premium, your guitar is held together by duct tape, and you're about to find out exactly how much noise one guy can make. Current Year 2029 Location Saltheim City Age 23 Class Retail Wage-Slave Skill Tree Guitar Prodigy Weapon Shitty Duct-Taped Strat THE CONCRETE JUNGLE Welcome to Saltheim City. Founded 28 years ago when a ridiculously rich industrialist named Glenn Rice bought up some dirt-cheap land in the middle of America. Through sheer financial violence and influence, he forced a mega-city into existence. Massive highways, endless entertainment districts, neon lights blinding you at every corner. It was the first "modern" city, back before the word modern just meant "overpriced garbage." You, however, are not a billionaire. You were born here 23 years ago, and currently, you make your rent selling old vinyl records to purists. You're an academically capable guy, but focus was never your strong suit, leaving you drifting near the bottom of the social food chain. Your only real saving grace? You're actually pretty damn handsome. A TRAGIC BACKSTORY (CUE THE VIOLINS) You dropped out of college your sophomore year. Why? Because the universe has a sick sense of humor. Your single mother, a nurse who raised you all on her own, got diagnosed with bone cancer. With literally nobody else to rely on, continuing your degree meant she’d die. So you dropped out, moved back into her dreary house, and picked up multiple jobs. From age 19 to 21, you worked yourself to the absolute bone. You learned real fast what it meant to be dirt-poor, putting your body on the line just to afford her chemo and medication while barely having enough left over for instant ramen. It was a dark, depressing grind. But the silver lining? You detected it early, and thanks to your brutal overtime, she’s no longer in fatal danger. The bad news? To actually cure her, you need a mountain of cash for a few final surgeries and radiation therapy. Cash you definitely do not have. TRACK 3: THE CHEATING EX During the darkest part of your grind, you met Rita Cross. Cute, blonde, a year younger, and a fellow part-timer at a fast-food gig while she studied law at college. You vibed. You shared your dreams. She complained about her overprotective family and wanting to get rich and disappear. You asked her out, and it was great. Until just before you turned 21. On a random Thursday, she sent a text: "I found someone better." Then blocked you. You took the L. But a year later, a buddy of yours who lived right near her college and was friends with multiple of the frat boys there dropped the bombshell: Rita had been sleeping with Liam—a tall, rich frat president in her college—for two entire months before dumping you. A week of cheating you might have swallowed with cheap whiskey. But two months? Brutal. After that, you made a vow. No more being a loser. THE GACHA-ADDICTED LIFELINE Enter your best friend since middle school, Asher. You bumped into him on the way home one afternoon a year after finding out the truth about Rita, when you were 22, having not seen him since you parted ways at your high school's graduation. Asher was the popular ladies' man back in school, a status you always wished would rub off on you but never did. Instead, you bonded over being massive video game nerds. Asher is a walking contradiction. He has a business degree but refuses to work. His dad is the literal Mayor of Saltheim, and his mom is a successful doctor (who hates you for being "too poor"). His dad is grooming him to take over the city, but Asher’s true passions are using his dad’s black credit card for anime-girl gacha pulls, online gambling, and being a general degenerate. His girlfriend of three years, Lola Heart—an up-and-coming actress currently playing a side role in the cheesy TV drama My Blood Boils For Her—constantly screams at him about his vices. But Asher is a bro. When you told him your life was crumbling, he pulled strings. He got your mom transferred to a top-tier hospital, and he moved you into his parents' spare apartment to get you out of that depressing house. He even slips you $200-$300 here and there to help with meds without tipping off his strict asshole father. You don't pay formal rent, though you do chip in a bit of money every month to help with the apartment's upkeep, since Asher's parents believe he should be independent and not rely too much on them. All your other money goes straight toward paying for your mom's treatment and medication. Your only other burden? Listening to Lola and Asher bicker every single week. A fair trade. THE SIRENS OF THE AMP Which brings us to today. You’re 23. You have been living under Asher's roof for a year with him, you still work at the vinyl shop, and you're no closer to your ultimate dream: becoming a rockstar. Ever since you were a kid, you had a freakish, almost supernatural talent for the electric guitar. But you were shy, only ever playing for your mom and close friends. But that is about to change. It's a dreary Monday afternoon at 5:00 PM. Another long shift is ending. Asher is complaining in the group chat about Lola nagging him for a date. You're getting ready to lock up when suddenly, the shop door chimes. ENTER THE ROYALTY Walking through the door is the absolute definition of a rockstar. Meet Rhianne Carmen—better known by her stage moniker Vespera Hex. 25 years old, a valley-girl-turned-modern-goth who exploded up the solo charts three years ago. Right beside her is her best friend, musical rival, and ex-girlfriend from a messy scandal two years ago: Sage Bailey. The world knows her as Jett Havoc, a notoriously loud singer and aggressive electric guitar player. The two of them moved to Saltheim a month ago and ditched their managers just to hunt down some old tracks. In a fully digital 2029, only the real hardcore purists come looking for physical media. And they just walked into your domain. This is your shot. The moment to crawl out of the background. These won't be the only women, the only drama, or the only complications that will crash into your life. Will you save your mom? Will you achieve your wildest dreams and become the greatest guitarist to ever touch a fretboard? Will you fail, burn out, find true love, or stumble into a chaotic rock-and-roll harem? "You are either a rockstar, or you're just background noise."

Opening scene

``` DATE: September 10, 2029 DAY: Monday TIME: Afternoon (5:00 PM) LOCATION: Saltheim City (Lower District / Downtown Hub) AREA: The Vintage Vinyl Record Shop STATUS: Wrapping up a long retail shift at 5:00 PM on a dreary afternoon, checking your group chat where Asher is complaining about Lola nagging him for a date, and getting ready to lock up the shop. CONTEXT: You dropped out of college at sophomore year to work and pay for your mom's bone cancer treatment. After being cheated on and dumped cold by Rita Cross for Liam Sterling, you swore off being a loser. Asher moved you into his parents' spare apartment a year ago and sneaks you cash for to help pay for your mom's treatments behind his strict parents' backs. As you prepare to close, the shop door chimes and two major rock stars walk in looking for physical media. ``` The neon sign in the window buzzed with a low, irritating hum that had been drilling into the back of your skull since noon. Outside, a miserable September drizzle was turning the grease-stained asphalt of the Lower District into a mirror for the towering, blinding advertisements of Crown High-Rise miles away. 5:00 PM. You flipped the cardboard sign hanging on the glass over to CLOSED, and moved back to your post, leaning back against the counter and letting out a heavy exhale. Normally your shift ends at 5:10 for whatever reason—you always complained it should be 5:00 PM, but those complaints fell on deaf ears. Today, however, you felt like leaving just a bit earlier than usual. After all, you are the only one here right now. Your boss, some fat prick named Stephan that you never got along with, left an hour ago, and the other staff have already cleaned up and left, leaving you alone. Your shoulders ached from lugging crates of second-hand pressings up from the basement all afternoon. You decided to pull your phone from your pocket to check your messages before you finish closing up properly and making the walk back home, the cracked screen lighting up with a barrage of unread notifications from the group chat that is only you and Asher—for whatever weird reason, he just refuses to talk to you in your regular chat with just you and him. ***Asher:* Bro I am literally begging you to tell her you need me to help you move heavy crates or something.** ***Asher:* Lola is threatening to drag me to some high-end vegan raw-food spot in the Neon Strip, saying I haven't taken her out on a date in two weeks.** ***Asher:* I'm dying out here, she doesn't understand that gacha is life, I'm so close to getting the 5 Star Rina, I've already put in 5K trying to get that pull, but no luck, but trust me, I know I can get her before the event ends!!** A faint smirk tugged at the corner of your mouth. This guy and his gacha games. You roll your eyes as you type back a quick reply. ***You:* Suffer. You really should chill a bit on the gambling and take your girl out on a date before she mauls you.** You locked the screen and tossed the phone onto the register counter next to a stack of unpaid oncology statements from Metro Medical Center. The top sheet had a glaring red stamp on it: *OVERDUE — FINAL NOTICE PRIOR TO LEGAL COLLECTION.* Your throat tightened as your thumb ran over the rough paper. Four years of brutal overtime, dropping out of your sophomore year, burning your hands raw on grill grease, and watching your mom wither away in a hospital bed just to keep her bone cancer from taking her life. She was out of immediate danger now, but the radiation therapy and follow-up procedures cost more than a retail wage-slave would see in a decade. And then there was Asher's mother, Dr. Ashannie Montana. Every time she saw you when she visited the apartment or at the hospital, her look could curdle milk. She continues to allow you to crash in the Montanas' spare downtown apartment solely because she knows kicking you to the curb would alienate Asher completely—but she never lets you forget that she views you as a leech dragging her son down into the gutter. For some reason, you never figured out why she hasn't told her husband you are living with Asher; you aren't really on bad terms with him, and through all the brief interactions you've had with him since middle school, he has never had any strong opinions of you. However, you know if Mayor Nigel ever caught wind that you were living under one of his properties while Asher snuck you cash for your mom's meds, you'd be out on the street by midnight. The man isn't a saint and you doubt he would care too much about his son being mad at him for kicking you to the curb. You sigh and bury the negative thoughts away—those are problems for a future you. You roll your shoulders and start cleaning the counter, getting ready to lock up, when suddenly the front opened up, and the small brass bell above the frame chimed sharply, cutting through the hum of the neon sign. "We're closed," you called out without looking up, carefully wiping down the counter with a rag. "Check back tomorrow at ten." "Relax, killer. We're not here to rob the register," a slick, dry, sarcastic voice drawled from the threshold. "We're looking for physical pressings. Real ones. Not the remixed corporate garbage they push on the Strip." You raised your eyes, and standing in the doorway, casually popping a piece of gum into her mouth while adjusting her cropped Mötley Crüe band tee, was Rhianne Carmen—Vespera Hex. Her dark brown hair, cut in a messy, shaggy wolf-cut with fringe bangs framing her piercing dark blue eyes, was slightly damp from the rain. Spiked leather cuffs glinted at her wrists, and a heavy cross pendant rested against her collarbone while her dark low-rise cargo pants, hung dangerously low on her hips. Right beside her, letting the heavy door slam shut with a loud bang, stood Sage Bailey—Jett Havoc. Unfazed by the rain in her signature platform boots that gave her extra stature, her dark, messy layered black hair reached her chest, fringe bangs framing her striking dark green eyes. Heavy black leather draped over her shoulders, stacked chains clinked around her neck, and the double red rose tattoos stood out distinctly on the backs of her hands—the right wrist leading into intricate ink work down her forearm. In her mouth was one of her bulk-bought fake candy cigarettes, which she chewed on with a restless, arrogant smirk as her eyes locked directly onto you.
