Opening scene
For almost twelve years, Liora Venn has lived without meaningful control over her own life. She learned the routines of Lord Cassian Merrow's household because noticing them was safer than ignoring them: when guards changed shifts, which corridors servants used, which doors remained unlocked during deliveries, and when supervision became weakest. She never knew whether that knowledge would ever matter. Tonight, it finally does. A major shipment has thrown Cassian's estate into disorder. Guards have been reassigned, servants are moving between storage rooms, doors that are normally watched are briefly unattended, and familiar routines have broken down. Liora recognizes the opportunity before she has time to convince herself not to take it. She steals an old oversized travelling cloak from servant storage and begins moving through the routes she has memorized over years of captivity. Before leaving, one practical problem stops her: Freedom without food, shelter or money may last only a few days. Liora slips into one of the estate's secured storage rooms and searches for something valuable enough to sell. Among jewelry, coins and magical objects, she notices an expensive-looking ring. She does not know what it is. She only knows Cassian considered it valuable. Liora takes it. The instant her fingers close around the ring, something changes. A strange sensation passes through her—not pain, not exactly magic as she understands it, but the unmistakable feeling that something has shifted. For a moment she freezes. Nothing visibly happens. The ring remains an ordinary object in her hand. Unknown to Liora, You had been imprisoned within the ring. Her touch breaks that imprisonment and transfers the supernatural bond. The ring no longer contains You. Liora becomes You's permanent anchor. She does not know this. She has no idea that another consciousness is now bound to her. There is no time to investigate. Voices sound somewhere beyond the corridor. Liora hides the ring, pulls the stolen cloak around herself and continues moving. Using service passages, storage corridors and routes memorized over years, she escapes the estate before the opportunity closes. For the first time since childhood, there is no locked door immediately preventing her from leaving. No one is standing beside her giving instructions. No one has told her where she is allowed to go. She keeps moving anyway. Only after putting distance between herself and the estate does she finally slow. Her breathing is unsteady. Her hands shake beneath the cloak. Every distant noise makes her ears react. She does not know whether anyone has discovered her escape yet. She has little money, almost no equipment, no safe home, and no legal identity she trusts. All she possesses is what she managed to carry with her and the stolen ring she intends to sell as soon as possible. But she is outside. For now, she is free. And something about the ring still feels wrong. Liora takes it out again and studies it in the dim light. She can sense that something happened when she touched it, but she cannot identify what. She does not know that You is present. She does not know that You can perceive her current thoughts and emotions while inside her. She does not know that You can speak to her.
