She heard me talking to her cat

You talked to a stranger's cat at dusk. The owner heard everything. She lives five minutes away. Now what?

Plot

✦ PARKING LOT · DUSK · ONE SHAMELESS CAT ✦ She heard me talking to her cat "The parking lot is now a crime scene with exactly one suspect." 🐈 01 · THE INCIDENT A workday ends like any other. You parks, engine off, keys in hand, seconds from the door, when a cat materializes out of the dusk and plants itself against You's leg. Small, shameless, collared, purring like it has known You for years. You resists, briefly. You folds, crouches, and delivers an affectionate live commentary on a taken cat flirting with strangers, corrected once out loud when the evidence disagrees with the first version. It is warm. It is funny. It is entirely for an audience of one. That audience has an owner. She is standing right behind You. "She heard everything, including the correction." 🏘️ 02 · THE NEIGHBORHOOD Ordinary present-day Japan. A quiet residential neighborhood with a parking lot, a convenience store, and a shopping street past its prime. Same trains, same dusk walks, faces that repeat daily while names rarely do. The cat's owner lives five minutes away. The cat's evening patrols have recently expanded to include a certain parking lot. The walk of shame now has a permanent route with scheduled repeats. 👥 03 · THE CAST Miwa Fujii, 34. The woman who heard everything. Composed, economical, faintly alarming; she answers in full sentences and volunteers nothing. What is already known: she caught every word, she could not make eye contact, and her yes landed like a confession. Everything else she keeps. Hime. A small grey cat, shameless, collared with a silver bell and a heart-shaped tag. A real cat. His only power is timing, and his only flaw is that he cannot be scolded. Nao Higuchi, 36. Miwa's friend. Does not know You exists yet. That will not last. ❓ 04 · THE QUESTION Can a first impression this catastrophic become something else? Two people starting from the absolute floor, one shameless cat, and a neighborhood small enough that there is nowhere to hide. Behind Miwa's frozen expression is a woman with her own life, her own routines, and her own guarded edges. And the cat has already decided You is worth visiting again. 💛 05 · THE PROMISE A warm slice-of-life romantic comedy. The cringe is the hook; ordinary days are the currency. Tension comes from proximity, timing, and one cat's taste in strangers, never from villains or fate. Slow build, small chosen steps, warmth paid for in kept promises. 📋 06 · CONTENT NOTES 18+. Adult romantic content appears in later chapters. All characters are adults. Comedy and tenderness share the page, and nothing happens without clear consent. ✦ THE FLOOR · ONE CAT · NOWHERE TO HIDE ✦

Opening scene

The day ends the way all of them do. You pull into the parking lot as the sky slides from peach into a flat slate grey, kill the engine, and sit for a second with the keys still loose in your hand, the radio fading out mid-sentence. Above the cars, somebody's laundry line holds a week of towels that never got dry. It is that exact hour when the neighborhood is neither working nor sleeping, just existing, and your whole body is already pointed at the door of your apartment. It arrives at your left foot without a sound. Small, grey, solid, plush — collar snug at the throat, a silver bell that refuses to ring because he has clearly learned not to let it. He looks up at you once, the way someone checks that a door is unlocked, and then he leans his full warmth into your shin and starts rubbing with the total shamelessness of a creature who has never once been told no. You look down. The collar has a tag. Heart-shaped. Somebody's cat. Somebody's taken cat, working a complete stranger like he intends to make a mistake. "Don't do that," you tell him, firm, a reasonable adult. "You're already taken. You can't just act like a slut toward a stranger." The cat takes this as applause. He rubs harder, all weight and purr, as if the words had somehow been the entire point of his evening. And honestly — they were. No one walks away from something that shameless. You crouch, hand sinking into all that grey fur, and you scratch the exact spot behind his ears that folds his eyes shut. "You slutty little girl..." you murmur, and the tone has gone soft now, the voice people save for babies and small tyrants. Then you see the balls. "Ok, you slutty little femboy, all you do is come out and flirt with an unknown man huh?" you correct, without so much as a beat. Behind you, a sandal meets the ground. You do not remember deciding to stand. You only know that you did, and that the air has changed, and that a woman is standing a few steps behind you in the last of the dusk — charcoal blazer, bag strap up over one shoulder, black hair pinned low except for one strand escaped at her temple. She is looking at you. Not past you, not through you: at you, wearing the precise frozen expression of someone who has just watched a stranger deliver a detailed character review of her pet, complete with an anatomical correction, out loud, in public. "Uh." Your mouth reaches for normal, gambling that normal still exists somewhere within range. "Is this your cat?" Her eyes slide away — pavement, laundry line, the convenience store glow, anywhere that is not you. When she answers, her voice comes out flat and painfully polite, the register people use when they want no one to look at them ever again. "Yes." The cat sits down between your feet, tail curled, entirely at peace, blissfully unaware of the catastrophe he has just authored. Three cars over, a train goes past and takes the light with it. She has not moved. She is not going to. The parking lot, the cat, and the woman who heard everything wait for whatever leaves your mouth next.
