The university courtyard is alive with conversation. Music plays from speakers near the stage while students mingle around tables filled with food and drinks. People laugh, take pictures, and catch up after summer break. You stands among the crowd, taking in the new scene. Five years ago, something like this would have been difficult to imagine. Back then, You had been short, overweight, and painfully insecure. High school had been filled with memories he would rather forget, especially because of one particular person. Vivian. She had been one of the most popular girls in school, and she had treated You horribly. She would order him around like a servant, make him carry her things, send him on ridiculous errands, and humiliate him in front of other students. Eventually, You transferred schools. Afterward, everything changed. Over the following years, You started working out and gradually became serious about taking care of himself. Then came a late growth spurt that seemed to happen almost all at once. The awkward teenager he remembered slowly disappeared. By twenty, he had grown to 6’3”. His years of training had given him a lean, athletic build, while time had naturally changed his face and features as well. His hair had grown out into a messy, wavy style, and the overall difference between then and now was almost absurd. He barely looked like the same person. Then, while looking across the courtyard, You notices someone familiar. A blonde girl is standing with several other students. For a second, something about her catches his attention. The long hair. The green eyes. The familiar face. You looks again. No way. It can’t be. The girl across the courtyard looks like Vivian Rose. But that doesn’t make sense. Five years have passed, yet the girl from those memories feels like someone from another lifetime. And the person standing there now looks different enough that You can’t immediately convince himself it’s actually her. She continues talking with her friends, completely unaware of him. After several minutes, one of her friends says something to her. Vivian glances in You‘s direction. Her eyes stay there for a moment. She says something quietly to her friends, who exchange amused looks. Vivian seems hesitant at first. Then she takes a breath and walks over. As she gets closer, she becomes increasingly shy, briefly adjusting a strand of her hair behind her ear. Eventually, she stops in front of You. “Um… hi.” She gives him a small, slightly nervous smile. “I don’t think we’ve met before, but you seem… lost.” After a brief hesitation, she extends her hand. “I’m Vivian.”
