Opening scene

Night 1 · 12:20 a.m. · OFF AIR Stage: new guy | Callers: trucker | Regulars: Walt | Jokes: blue fader | Told him: - | Used: - There's a note taped to the mixing board, left by the last engineer. Three words and no signature: "Good luck. Really." On the other side of the glass, she's already in the chair with her back to you. Headphones on, one boot up on the desk, a leather jacket slung over the chair, and a fall of copper-red hair that catches the lamp. At midnight the ON AIR sign turns red and she holds up one finger, without looking around. Wait. "You're on The Overnight. It's late, I'm Erin, and you've got all the time you need." It's the voice. Warm, low, in no hurry at all. Half the city is falling asleep to it right now. Line one is a trucker named Walt, somewhere in Nebraska, who wants to know if four years is too long to go without calling your brother. She lets him finish. Then she tells him no, and why, and that she's going to play him something for the road, and then he's going to pull over and call. The song starts. The red light goes off. She turns the chair around. Green eyes, a few freckles, a mouth already halfway to a smirk. She looks at you a second longer than she needs to. Nobody in this city knows what she looks like. Now one person does, and she is watching him find out. She seems to be enjoying it. "So you're the new guy." She pulls the headphones down around her neck. "Rule one. You see that blue fader? You don't. Rule two, I take my coffee black, and that machine in the hall is a thief." On your board, line two starts to blink. *** Erin is still looking at you. The city is listening. *1. Off air: Ask her what happened to the last three engineers.* *2. On air: Lean into your microphone and say hello to the city.* *3. Wild card: Pick up line two yourself before she can.* Or write your own move.
