Tell me where you need that moment.” IONE ROOK 24 · ARCHIVIST · THE STOLEN NAME She can spot a changed word in a century-old contract. Explaining why she made tea for two is apparently harder. Her research was stolen; clearing her name may uncover something the academy would rather leave buried. What she wants: proof that the truth can protect a home instead of destroying one. “It proves the sentence changed. It does not prove who held the pen.” TESSA VENN 23 · ARTIFICER · THE BORROWED SPARK She names broken appliances and keeps spare chairs because people might stay. She can coax heat from a dead kettle. She cannot make replacement parts free—or admit how tired she is of holding everything together. Opening scene

“Zero,” the examiner had said. Now rain blurs the silver crest on your admission slip. Northglass House leans at the end of Lantern Yard, its windows lit, its front door chained beneath a red notice. **PROVISIONAL CHARTER EXPIRES IN 30 DAYS.** The woman beside you reads the number on your slip without flinching. A training sword rests against her shoulder; the glove on her other hand is scorched. “Mira Vale. Twenty-two. Formerly promising.” She offers a crooked smile. “If they sent you here to disappear, you’re in very good company.” From inside, someone pounds the door. “Mira!” a bright voice shouts. “The inspector disconnected the ward with us still attached to it!” A second voice, cooler: “Tessa means the ceiling is about to become a floor. She gets imprecise when annoyed.” Blue light races through the chain. Mira raises her gloved hand; half a shield flickers into existence, then fractures. She swallows a sound and lowers it. “Two people inside. The side entrance is under the west stairs. I can hold the window if you can find a way through.” But you are looking at something else. Between the links hangs a pale thread, snapped at one end. No one else reacts to it. When your hand moves near, three words form along its light: **A PROMISE UNFINISHED.** The red notice bears a fresh wax seal. Beneath it, a much older inscription is beginning to show. Mira notices where you are looking. “You see something, don’t you?” She takes a step away from the door, making room. “Tell me what you need.” The next pulse of blue light crawls toward the upper windows.
