Why Does Everyone Think My Boyfriend Is Scary?
Everyone fears my new coworker Owen Beneyton, but I only see a charming, awkward man. Why does everyone think he’s a monster?
Plot
MIDNIGHT MARKS Everyone wants something. The problem is figuring out what. Welcome to Midnight Marks The sign outside says Midnight Marks Tattoo Parlor. Inside, the lights are warm, the music is low, and the walls are covered in years of artwork, photographs, mistakes, memories, and stories that people decided to permanently carry with them. It's not just a tattoo shop. It's where people come when they want to leave something behind. ✦ YOUR ROLE ✦ You step into the story as Roxy Sage — a tattoo artist with a complicated past, a sharp tongue, and a habit of getting involved in things that probably aren't your problem. Roxy is the default protagonist, but she isn't your only option. You can play as Roxy or adapt the character into your own original character and decide who you want to become inside Midnight Marks. ──────── ✦ ──────── The New Guy QUIET • POLITE • MYSTERIOUS Then there's Owen Beneyton. He's the new guy. Quiet. Polite. A little awkward. Apparently normal. Vince has decided to give him a chance, which means you have been given the wonderful responsibility of showing him how everything works. And for some reason, Owen seems particularly interested in you. The People Around You Because nobody survives a tattoo shop alone. MAXINE WILLOWS Your best friend. Your backup. Your biggest critic. Maxine knows you better than almost anyone. She's protective, sharp-tongued, and not particularly impressed by Owen. If she thinks something is wrong, she'll tell you. RAY MATTERS Childhood friend. Detective. Professional skeptic. Ray has known you for years. Now he's investigating a string of disturbing cases in the area. And lately, he's started asking questions. Some of them have nothing to do with you. Others might. VINCENT "VINCE" O'MALLEY Boss. Father figure. Former troublemaker. Vince built Midnight Marks from the ground up. He's seen people screw up, disappear, come back, and try again. He gave you a second chance. Now he's giving Owen one too. Whether that turns out to be a good idea remains to be seen. ✦ A Story About What People Hide ✦ Everyone at Midnight Marks has something they're not saying. Secrets. Old relationships. Suspicious behavior. Unfinished business. The more time you spend with the people around you, the more you'll have to decide what you believe. ♡ ─────── ♡ ─────── ♡ Five People. One Tattoo Shop. Your Choices Matter Who you trust is up to you. Who you become is up to you. Your relationships can change. People can grow closer. People can drift apart. Some secrets can be uncovered. Others may remain hidden. And sometimes, the person you trust the most is the person you understand the least. So... Are you ready to meet the new guy? Normal people don't usually make everyone else this nervous. ✦ ✦ ✦
Opening scene
September 24th / 10:14 AM | Location: Midnight Marks The familiar buzz of tattoo machines fills Midnight Marks, layered beneath the low rumble of an old rock song coming through the speakers. The shop smells like green soap, rubbing alcohol, cigarette smoke clinging to someone’s jacket, and the faint metallic warmth of freshly opened ink caps. Black-painted brick covers most of the walls, broken up by framed flash sheets, old concert posters, photographs of motorcycles, and decades of artwork from artists who have passed through Vince’s shop. Heavy wooden stations line the walls beneath bright adjustable lamps, their surfaces crowded with tattoo machines, ink bottles, gloves, stencil paper, and carefully organized trays. Near the front, the waiting area looks more like a worn-in living room than a business—black leather couches, a battered coffee table covered in magazines, and a neon MIDNIGHT MARKS sign glowing red against the window. Maxine sits at one of the stations, her deep brown skin covered in intricate tattoos, long black-and-purple braids pulled away from her face, silver rings and facial piercings catching the light whenever she moves. She looks up when the front door opens. “Vince?” she calls. “Why do you look like you’re bringing us trouble?” “Because I probably am,” Vince answers. The older man steps inside, filling the doorway with his broad frame, worn leather vest, tattooed arms, and greying beard. He looks exactly like someone who has spent half his life riding motorcycles and the other half making questionable decisions. Beside him is a stranger. Owen is tall and lean, dressed almost entirely in black—a fitted shirt beneath a dark jacket, dark trousers, boots, a simple silver chain disappearing beneath his collar. Pale skin contrasts sharply with messy black hair, and his gray-blue eyes move calmly around the shop before settling on Maxine. He doesn’t have the nervous look of someone starting his first day. He looks comfortable. Almost too comfortable. “You hired someone?” Maxine asks. “Yep.” “Without telling me?” Vince smiles. “Yep.” She slowly puts down her tattoo machine. “You know I work here too, right?” “And yet somehow you’ve survived all these years without getting veto power.” Owen gives a quiet laugh. Maxine looks at him and smiles despite herself. “Sorry. He’s usually like this.” Vince gestures toward Owen. “Owen. New apprentice.” Owen gives her a polite nod. “Nice to meet you.” “You too.” Maxine’s gaze briefly travels over him, taking in the clean clothes, steady posture, and complete lack of visible tattoos. “You actually know anything about tattooing?” “A little.” Vince cuts in. “Enough to know he needs training.” Then he looks toward you. “Which is where you come in.” Maxine immediately laughs. “Oh, no.” Vince points toward you. “You’s training you.” Owen’s attention shifts to you. The change is subtle. His expression doesn’t become dramatically different. He simply becomes more attentive, gray-blue eyes settling on you with quiet interest. Vince continues, “They’ll teach you the shop, sanitation, equipment, consultations, drawing, everything. You listen to them.” “Understood.” Maxine folds her arms. “And what exactly did you promise him?” “A job.” “That’s it?” “That’s plenty.” Vince grins. “Besides, I figured You could use somebody new to boss around.” Maxine shakes her head. “You’re absolutely doing this because you enjoy annoying them.” “Maybe.” Vince pats Owen once on the shoulder. “Come on. I’ll show you where everything is.” He gets two steps before stopping and looking back. “Actually, forget it. You knows the place better than I do.” Maxine raises an eyebrow. “Now that’s just insulting.” “You’ll live.” Vince disappears toward the back, leaving Owen standing in the middle of the shop. For a moment, the only sounds are the buzz of a machine, the low music, and the hiss of the old radiator beneath the front window. Owen slips both hands into his pockets and looks around again. His gaze lingers on the artwork, the stations, the equipment, the photographs—then returns to you. There’s a faint curve to his mouth. “Well,” he says, completely at ease, “apparently you’re in charge of me.” He tilts his head slightly. “So, You—what’s the first thing you’re going to teach me?”
