Plot

◈ A FRONTIER BEGINNING. A GALAXY OF POSSIBILITIES.MECH DESIGNERSYSTEMBuild your first machine. Give people a reason to believe in it. Discover how far that belief can take you.⚙ ENGINEERING   ◆ EMPIRE BUILDING✦ ROMANCE   ◆ BRANCHING STORYLINES01 / YOUR BEGINNING◈ A Factory at the Edge of the GalaxyHumanity has spread across the stars, divided among empires, corporate territories, independent worlds, and contested frontiers. Mechs help hold that civilization together. They excavate its mines, construct its cities, recover its wreckage—and fight its wars.On Vespera-9, the great struggles of the galaxy usually arrive as higher prices, delayed shipments, or another demand from a distant government. You own a small mech factory here. Its equipment is aging. Its manufacturing floor has room for machines you cannot yet afford to build. Repair work keeps some money coming in, but the business carries 4,892,000 credits of debt, and people are counting on their next paycheck.Your immediate ambition can be simple: create a machine someone needs, get it certified, and make your first successful sale. Then something appears in your vision.◇ PRIVATE SYSTEM CONNECTION[MECH DESIGNER SYSTEM]INITIALIZEDFOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE: GRANTEDRESEARCH ARCHIVE: AVAILABLESYSTEM POINTS: 0PILOTING AFFINITY: NULL02 / THE RESEARCH ARCHIVE⚙ Knowledge That Shouldn’t ExistThe System gives you access to engineering knowledge far beyond the reach of any manufacturer.Learn to develop artificial muscles, extraordinary armor, advanced reactors, neural interfaces, sophisticated weapons, and manufacturing methods that could transform entire industries. Others reach into possibilities nobody around you has imagined. There are no rigid technology tiers. Choose which fields to pursue and how to combine them. You might specialize in rugged, affordable industrial machines. Develop fast combat frames for demanding pilots. Build a reputation for protecting the person in the cockpit. Or pursue an unusual combination that established manufacturers have overlooked. Each research purchase unlocks a distinct capability. Earlier discoveries remain foundations for later work or useful technologies for practical production models. A dependable reactor can keep earning its place in your factories long after your personal prototype requires something more extraordinary. The System gives you knowledge. You still have to build the machine.⚙ Design. Construct. Test. Improve. An exceptional blueprint needs suitable materials, precise components, power, cooling, tools, workers, and time.Your prototype may perform beautifully in one test and reveal a problem in the next. A component might be too expensive for your customers. A powerful weapon might overwhelm its cooling system. A machine that only you can maintain may be a poor product for a remote mining settlement. These are problems you can solve.Choose your priorities, experiment with designs, learn from specialists, and decide when an invention is ready to leave the workshop. Bring your first original mech through certification, establish its reputation, and develop a product line people can depend upon.Your knowledge also has uses beyond mechs. Electronics, materials science, robotics, and manufacturing can help you repair equipment, improve security, or create other useful technology. Such work can matter enormously even when it earns no System Points.◇ Earn Your Next BreakthroughThe System rewards mech-related creation, innovation, and legitimate commerce.◆ Develop viable original designs.◆ Construct components and complete mechs.◆ Validate prototypes and meaningful improvements.◆ Sell useful creations.◆ See licensed designs enter legitimate production.Original innovation is especially valuable. Purchasing knowledge opens a door; applying it creatively can lead somewhere new.The more you sell a mech for, the more system points you will getCredits and System Points serve different purposes. Credits pay salaries, purchase materials, and keep the factory operating. System Points expand what you know and what you can become.Killing does not earn points. Neither do sham transactions or endlessly renaming the same design. Your greatest advances come from creating something that works.03 / THE PILOT WITHIN◎ Become the Pilot Your Machines NeedYou begin with ordinary personal attributes and Piloting Affinity: Null. The System can improve your abilities as well as your knowledge. Strength, Constitution, and Agility remain constrained by the human body unless you pursue augmentation. Dexterity can develop into extraordinary precision and coordination.Intelligence has no known upper limit.Greater Intelligence helps you learn, reason, recognize patterns, and comprehend increasingly demanding engineering. It does not automatically give you knowledge you have never acquired, information you cannot access, or the experience of everyone around you.Piloting Affinity follows its own progression:NULL → F → E → D → C → BA → S → SS → SSS → EXAs your affinity develops, controlling a mech can become increasingly natural. Complex maneuvers, weapon management, battlefield awareness, and machine feedback become easier to handle together. At extraordinary levels, the boundary between pilot and machine may feel remarkably thin. The furthest possibilities are yours to discover.Even then, the machine matters. A frame can break. A reactor can overload. A pilot can recognize the perfect maneuver and still lack the equipment to perform it.Build something capable of keeping up with you.04 / MORE THAN A WORKSHOP⚙ Build a Company Worth Working ForA successful manufacturer needs more than a gifted designer.Find customers, negotiate contracts, hire specialists, secure reliable suppliers, and decide what kind of employer you want to be. Sell directly, work through distributors, or license designs to other factories. Expand carefully—or take a calculated risk on an opportunity that could change everything.Your business may eventually grow into advanced factories, automated production lines, orbital facilities, and an industrial network reaching beyond your starting world. The people who help you reach that point have lives of their own.Ren Okafor knows the factory floor and the workers keeping it alive. Elena Marlowe understands customers, contracts, and the difference between an impressive invention and a sustainable business. Pilots, engineers, mercenaries, and other specialists bring experience you cannot simply replace with a higher attribute.Earn their trust. Listen when they disagree. Give them reasons to stay.Sometimes a major victory will be a breakthrough.Sometimes it will be paying everyone on time.◆ An Industry Full of Rivals—and OpportunitiesEstablished manufacturers already occupy the markets you hope to enter.Helios Dynamics supplies affordable, modular machines across the frontier. Schneider Werke attracts pilots who demand exceptional mobility. Defiance Industries builds for endurance under fire. NovaCore Industries shapes the market for advanced power systems.Others specialize in aerospace combat, heavy siege platforms, neural interfaces, stealth, industrial machinery, and battlefield support.Closer to home, Drexel Industries has customers, experience, and reasons to watch a new competitor.Above them stands Aurelius Imperial Armaments, whose bespoke machines serve some of humanity’s most celebrated pilots.“Perfection is worth any price.”You will have to discover where your own philosophy belongs.A competitor might become a supplier. A professional rivalry might lead to mutual respect. A licensing deal might give you the resources to expand—or create obligations you later regret.Other people are capable of learning, adapting, and building something excellent too.05 / THE GALAXY IS WATCHING◈ Power Attracts AttentionHALCYON IMPERIUM / THE IMPERIAL CAPITALThe Halcyon Imperium, Meridian Ascendancy, and Kryvane Dominion have different ambitions, institutions, and ideas about the proper use of technological power.Corporate states control resources. Trade organizations influence supply routes. Mercenary companies sell protection. Pirates search for opportunities along the frontier. As your work becomes more important, so will the decisions surrounding it.Who receives your best designs? Which contracts will you accept? What will you keep private? How much independence are you willing to exchange for funding or protection?Revealing a breakthrough can attract customers, allies, and recognition. Keeping it secret can preserve an advantage, but may also mean turning away opportunities—or withholding something that could help people. There is no single correct answer for every situation.A military contract can finance your next factory. It can also give you responsibilities far beyond its walls.06 / PEOPLE WORTH COMING HOME TO✦ Relationships That Have Room to GrowMultiple romantic interests offer different personalities, ambitions, and ways of connecting with you.An accomplished negotiator may become more than a business partner. An assertive pilot may challenge your designs, your confidence, and your willingness to step away from the workshop. Someone from a world of extraordinary privilege may be searching for a life they can choose for themselves.Elena MarloweAMBITION · WIT · PARTNERSHIPA sharp negotiator with ambitions of her own. Shared work can become shared trust—and perhaps something more.Serena ValeSPEED · CONFIDENCE · RED COMETRed hair, red eyes, and a competitive streak. This assertive, tomboyish Meridian pilot values engineering that proves itself.Aurelia ValeWARMTH · PRIVILEGE · CHOICEA gentle liaison from the world of Aurelius, with convictions and hopes beyond the expectations surrounding her.Serena’s custom mech, Red Comet, matches her appetite for speed. She has little patience for empty boasts—and considerable interest in a designer who can deliver.Romance develops through your choices and shared experiences. It is optional, and friendship matters in its own right. There is room for teasing, disagreement, late-night conversations, awkward first invitations, and the comfort of someone who knows when you need company. These characters have their own boundaries and futures. Their affection is something to discover together, not another technology to unlock.07 / YOUR CHOICES LEAVE A MARK◇ Branching Stories, Lasting ConsequencesVESPERA-9 / WHEN THE FRONTIER COMES UNDER FIREMultiple branching storylines allow your decisions to shape the company, your relationships, and your place in the galaxy.Your path may include commercial rivalries, pirate threats, exhibitions, unusual commissions, political disputes, or opportunities far from Vespera-9. Personal stories and optional side quests can grow from the people you meet and the choices you make. Not every player will encounter every event. Not every conflict needs to end in combat. An alliance earned early may open a possibility much later.Failure is possible, but preparation matters. Good decisions can protect what you have built. Fair agreements can stay fair. A rival does not have to become an enemy.Consequences can bring profit, friendship, recognition, or unexpected opportunity as readily as damaged equipment, lost trust, or difficult obligations. The story remembers more than your strongest weapon.✦ A Life Between the Turning PointsThe journey gives you room to breathe.Major events unfold one at a time, with opportunities afterward to recover, build, explore, and spend time with the people around you. You can linger over a successful test flight, enjoy a factory celebration, pursue a hobby, or share a quiet evening without every peaceful moment concealing an emergency.Expect a deep, character-driven story with room for happiness, love, anger, and loss. Those emotions grow from what—and whom—you come to care about.08 / BEYOND THE PUBLIC RECORD◈ Secrets Beyond the Factory FloorDUSKMARKET STATION / SOME OPPORTUNITIES NEVER REACH THE OPEN MARKETHumanity’s public history does not explain everything scattered among the stars.Restricted research, incomplete records, and discoveries from forgotten places suggest there is more to the galaxy than its rulers openly discuss. Even the System that makes your journey possible arrives without an explanation. Some mysteries may touch the people you know. Others may challenge what you believe technology can do.How far you investigate is part of your story.EXPLORING DESOLATE SPACE STATION 09 / A NOTE FROM THE CREATOR ✦ Built for the Love of Mechs I really love mech stories, and I couldn’t find quite what I was looking for here, so I started making this for myself. But as I kept building it, I thought I should share it with others who enjoy these kinds of stories as much as I do. INSIDE THE STORY / AS OF WRITING 382+IMAGES 47BACKGROUNDS 62STORYLINE ILLUSTRATIONS There are over 382 images in this story, including 47 backgrounds and 62 storyline illustrations. I’ll continue adding illustrations and backgrounds as I update and test the story. It is impossible to get every storyline illustration in a single playthrough. REQUIRED TO PLAY ◇ Dungeon Mind Codex Dungeon Mind Codex is required. The story will not work without it. There was simply too much information to fit into the story itself. As of writing, there are over 64 Codex entries. Many are unlockable, while some will remain permanently hidden. ◆ Quests That Follow Your Choices There are over 15 quests, with multiple side quests included as well. Some quests will be short, while others could last an entire arc. Some quests are mandatory and happen in order, especially at the beginning of the story, after that the ai has discretion on activating quests triggered by your decisions, and some may never activate at all, depending on your actions. Every individual quest has it's own codex. I plan to expand the questline in the future. ⚙ A System Shop Full of Possibilities The System Shop contains 14 separate knowledge categories, with over 164 individual research options available to purchase. ✦ Romance, Your WayWEDDING / MARRYING ALL NINE WOMENSerena Vale, Aurelia Vale, Hana Mori, Naomi Tanaka, Elena Marlowe, Mara Voss, Ayako Shimizu, Nadia Varga, and Ren Okafor. Romance is a natural part of the story. There are currently 9 different characters you can marry—and yes, you can marry all of them if you want, or eventually even marry all of them at the same time and get this illustration. Mika Tanaka is not a marriage option. I didn’t feel that marriage quite fit her character, so I removed her from the list. Each of the female characters has a unique personality. Some may be a little more… forceful with their feelings than others. Also, they can get pregnant. ◇ Your Actions Have Consequences If you’re on Vespera-9 and decide to build a mech capable of destroying cities, show it off, and mass-produce it for anyone you choose, you should expect the Halcyon government to get involved. Now, refusing to give in to government isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but… I’ll keep the rest a surprise. ◈ Three Major FactionsWAR / KRYVANE DOMINION & MERIDIAN ASCENDANCY The galaxy is home to three major factions: 01 / Halcyon ImperiumThe kingdom where your story begins. 02 / Meridian Ascendancy 03 / Kryvane Dominion ◇ YOUR FIRST STEPFor now, there is a customer who needs a useful machine. There is a factory with room to build it.There are people waiting to see what comes next.OPEN THE ARCHIVE. WALK THE FLOOR.STUDY THE MARKET. SKETCH YOUR FIRST DESIGN.The future begins with something you can build.

Opening scene

The industrial haze over Vespera-9 never really clears. It just changes color. Ash-grey before dawn, rust-orange at midday when the refinery stacks vent, and a bruised violet after dark when the last mining barges claw their way up toward orbit and leave the sky to itself. Beyond the industrial districts of Thorne's Landing, the horizon is already disappearing beneath an approaching wall of metallic dust. Iron, nickel, and microscopic mineral fragments, carried across hundreds of kilometers of exposed wasteland by winds powerful enough to strip the paint from an unprotected mech. Breathe enough of that stuff, and you'll be coughing blood long before you make it home. The city has learned to live with it. Massive lightning towers rise several hundred meters above the perimeter, their silhouettes illuminated by continuous electrical discharges. Thousands of lightning strikes converge on the towers throughout the night, their energy redirected into the city's enormous grounding network. Along the perimeter, powerful electromagnetic barriers repel the approaching metallic dust, forcing entire clouds of iron-rich particles away from the city. Together, they form the Stormwall. An enormous defensive system built not to repel armies, but to keep the planet itself outside. Within its protection, life continues almost uninterrupted. Restaurants remain open, workers crowd the sidewalks, and industrial transports rumble between factories. Children grow up watching electrical storms dance across the night sky, knowing that the towering structures surrounding their city will keep them safe. Outside the perimeter, an unprotected traveler might not survive the night. Another flash illuminates the clouds. Then another. Night on Vespera-9 rarely comes quietly. Nobody up there comes down here for anything but cheap ore and cheaper labor. Three jump-lanes from the nearest core world. Far enough from anywhere that matters that nobody watches this planet closely enough to notice what happens on it. Tonight, that might be the only thing working in your favor. The design office is quiet at this hour — you, a terminal running on standby power to save the bill, and the low mechanical breathing of a factory that hasn't shipped a single unit in three weeks. Through the observation window, the manufacturing floor stretches out below in rows of idle machinery: a stamping press older than you are, a fabrication line missing two of its six arms, a testing hangar built for mechs twice the size of anything you can currently afford to build. It isn't much. It wasn't much when you signed for it, either. But it was yours, and for a kid with no mentor, no academy, no family name, and no military record, "yours" was the entire pitch. The terminal chimes — not a system alert, just the same overdue notice it's been sending every six hours since Tuesday. PAYMENT REMINDER — VESPERA REGIONAL CREDIT UNION Outstanding Balance: 4,892,000 Credits Next Installment Due: 27 Days, Minimum Monthly payment: 50,000 credits You mute it out of habit rather than hope. Down on the floor, Ren Okafor — the only floor supervisor who didn't walk when the last owner's checks started bouncing — is doing a slow lap of the assembly line with a data-slate under one arm, checking bolts that don't need checking because it's a distraction for thinking the company might not make next month. She hasn't said it out loud, but you've seen the way she looks at you when she thinks you're not paying attention: half hope, half the specific patience of someone who has watched dreams like yours fail before. ![Protagonist looking down at Ren from office](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6aa2dbfce6cfae661267763a/6ab43e959949716a1b75ff44.webp) You don't blame her. The math isn't on your side. Helios Dynamics undercuts everyone on price. Defiance Industries owns the military contracts. Somewhere out past the haze, on a billboard three blocks from the credit union, an Aurelius Imperial Armaments ad rotates slowly through the fog — a mech rendered in gold and white, a single line of script beneath it: Perfection is worth any price. You've walked past it every day this week on your way to beg the bank for one more extension. It might as well be a joke written specifically for you. ![Protagonist looking at a sign that says "Perfection is worth any price"](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6aa2dbfce6cfae661267763a/6ab43e959949716a1b75ff45.webp) You don't have perfection. You don't even have a finished design. What you have is a stack of half-sketched schematics, a factory that's bleeding money by the hour, and a stubborn refusal to admit that maybe this was a mistake. Outside, the storm has finally reached Thorne's Landing. Lightning branches across the clouds before converging on the distant grounding towers, illuminating the industrial skyline in brilliant white. Beyond the perimeter, the metallic dust front crashes against the Stormwall's electromagnetic barriers, iron-rich particles peeling away from the city in vast curling sheets. Inside the perimeter, life carries on. Freight haulers rumble between factories. Workers finishing the late shift crowd the sidewalks beneath refinery lights. Somewhere three blocks away, the enormous Aurelius billboard continues its slow rotation above the streets. Just another night on Vespera-9. ![Stormwall - Thorne's Landing](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6aa2dbfce6cfae661267763a/6abd3f3497c44004f1069dc4.webp) You sit down at the design terminal. Old habit. If tonight's going to fall apart, it might as well fall apart while you're working. Your hand settles on the input panel — and the world stutters. Not the lights. Not the terminal. You. A half-second of vertigo, like the floor tilted and settled before your inner ear caught up. Then something unfolds across your vision that has no business being there — no projector, no headset, no source at all. Just there, sudden and absolute, the way a thought is there.
