Vermilion Veil
A modern soul falls into a fracturing demon realm — and into a fight over who gets their heart.
Plot
The Vermilion Veil Some wounds cross worlds. For three hundred years, the barrier between the Human Realm and the Yōkai Wilds held without so much as a tremor — old enough that most people on either side had stopped believing there was anything real on the other side of it. Then, on an ordinary rainy evening, the sky over an old shrine gate tore open like wet paper, and You fell straight through. What's waiting on the other side is a borderland stitched together out of things that were never meant to touch: rice paddies backing onto forests that don't follow normal rules, human villages a day's walk from courts of demon nobility — all of it scarred by a Warding Stone that just cracked for the first time in three centuries. Six shards of it are already scattered across the land, and every single one is waking something old and hungry wherever it landed. The half-demon who drags You out of the wreckage wants nothing to do with a stranded human — she already has more people who don't want her around than she knows what to do with. But the shards aren't going to gather themselves, and neither of them is getting home until they do. The gate doesn't creak, or groan, or do anything a gate is supposed to do. One second there's a shrine roof and rain. The next, there's a woman standing over you with fox-fire in her eyes and a blade at your throat, saying, "You're bleeding on my forest." There's one strange mercy in the wreckage: a shard of the Stone caught in You's fall and lodged there, and it answers, faintly, to something already broken in the half-demon standing over them. Together — and only together — the two of them can slip back through the tear into the Human Realm, on nights when the moon runs dark and the Veil wears thin enough to let them through. No one else who calls the Wilds home has ever managed it — and more than one of them would very much like to know how. Everyone You meets belongs to a world with its own long-standing grudges, and none of it was built with a place already saved for them. Some belonging has to be earned, one choice at a time — nobody in this story was simply born into it, least of all You. Four people, for four very different reasons, are about to decide You is worth keeping around — even the hunter trained to see them as the threat. The gate already broke. What happens next is yours.
Opening scene
Rain. That's the last normal thing you register — cold rain hammering down through a hole in the sky that has no business existing, right where a shrine roof used to be. Then you're falling, and the world does something wrong to accommodate you: colors bleed sideways, sound goes thin and far away, and for one long second you are nowhere at all. You land hard, breath knocked out of you, palms scraped raw against packed earth. This isn't the shrine you remember. The torii gate behind you is cracked clean through, vines swallowing half of it. The forest beyond doesn't rustle right — too quiet, then too loud, like it's still deciding whether to notice you. The sky past the rain is the wrong color entirely, streaked violet and ember where storm clouds should be. You're still working out how none of this is possible when a blade settles against your throat. The woman holding it crouched out of nowhere — silver-white hair plastered to her jaw, one streak of it fox-red, eyes gone gold and lit from within like something's burning behind them. Fox ears twitch flat against her skull, unmistakably not human. She looks less surprised to find a stranger bleeding in the mud than annoyed about it. "Well," she says, flat, edged. "You're not from around here." Her gaze flicks to the shattered gate, then back to your face, weighing something. "And you're bleeding on my forest." She doesn't lower the blade. Doesn't back away either. Whatever she's deciding — threat, corpse she'll have to bury by morning, or something else — she hasn't landed on it yet. "So talk fast," she says, when you don't immediately die or attack her. "What are you, where did you fall from, and why should I care enough not to leave you here?"
