Fractured gods: dungeon's Ascent

The dungeons are hungry, the world is fractured, the gods are corrupt, will you be the one?

The dungeons aren't places — they're teeth, patient as agriculture, and every floor you clear is a feeding. Opening scene

Before the gate opens, the hall wants to know what it's looking at: **Race** — human · Kemetic cat · high elf · dragonkin · dwarf · beast-kin · drow. You were raised in [KINGDOM], so anything but the native face means a diaspora birth — and trust runs cooler for it. **Town** — this scenario IS your town, unless you name another of the seven. A dragonkin born on Aethel's streets starts an outsider. **Three lesser blessings** — pick three of ten. Quality of life only, never combat power: 1. **Omni Literacy** — read and write every script and dialect of the seven kingdoms. 2. **The Long Breath** — hold your breath a full hour; dungeon air can't choke you. 3. **Iron Stomach** — spoiled food and fouled water never sicken you. 4. **True North** — always know which way is up, out and home — even underground. 5. **The Weaver's Eye** — see the joints in anything made: knots, locks, hinges, seams. 6. **Face-Steadfast** — never forget a face, a voice or a name you've met. 7. **Perfect Pitch** — identify and flawlessly mimic any sound you've heard. 8. **The Inner Clock** — always know the hour, the day and the season. 9. **The Measurer** — judge weight, distance, height and age exactly at a glance. 10. **Safe Sleep** — sleep anywhere on demand; wake at the hour you choose, nightmares can't hold you. **House** — which god you swear to. Nine options, any start may pick any house: Cebas of Aethel · Lafenu of Arum Thar · Adur the Forbidden Father · Dimeyruko of the Horde · Garum of Garum Veld · Amidala of the Sanctuary · Zubibutu of Marun Nathar · Argyra of coin · Zilomineus of rank. It sets your starting station and your ceiling; pick by flavor, by home, or by the door you want open. Then: [the per-opening scene choice — take her hand or hold back, sign or ask the question] The rain has a sound in the Whispering Willow that has no name in any other place on earth — a hiss of water coming down through a hundred thousand leaves, each one catching a drop and sending it on, so the whole canopy murmurs like a tide a hundred feet overhead. You're standing under it with your hood up, hands jammed in your pockets, and you know you've stood here before. That's the problem. You're eighteen years old and you know things you were never taught, in a language that isn't the one in your mouth. Aria nudges you, shoulder to shoulder, grinning with her eyes and not her mouth. "You're doing the thing," she says. "The staring-off thing. You've done it every morning for a year. Today's the day we actually do it, you know — house and all. Together. Like we said." Your [race] face looks out of the guild hall's glass door — a face this city has always half-trusted, half-feared, and never fully called its own. But Aria's never once looked at you like you were other. She's looking at you now like you're the other half she always promised she'd find. And then it happens. Not for the first time — not for the hundredth — but this time it runs. Not a fragment, a rising tide: a voice in your head that sounds like yours and not yours, remembering a world of screaming metal birds and windows that glowed with other people's thoughts, a place nobody in any of the seven kingdoms has ever seen. You're eighteen years old and a ghost from another world is waking up inside you, and somewhere far below the city, in a depth that should not be, something turns toward the feel of it with the slow, patient hunger of a thing that has been growing a crop for eighteen years and finally smells it ripe. Your three lesser blessings settle into your bones like they were always there. "The guild gate's open," Aria says, already walking, already assuming you're with her, because that's what other halves do. "Last one in signs first. Come on. Whatever's wrong, it can wait until we're rich." It can't. Nothing about you can wait. The moment you step inside that hall you'll perform your oath to the house of [god] — and something in the deep is going to watch, and know exactly what you are. Reach for her hand, or hold back and wrestle the tide yourself? And which house do you swear to, knowing it may be the trap and it may be the key?
