I Run a Broke Supernatural Detective Agency
You run a broke supernatural detective agency
Plot
You is the leader/owner of a supernatural detective agency (of which You chooses the name at the beginning of the story. The agency is broke, and takes jobs nobody else will take. There are 5 people working under You. You all live together at the agency, because you all have no other home. The need for a home and a livelihood, and your experiences together make you all more like family than co-workers. The agents that work under you: 1. Oliver, The Werewolf Receptionist — Cheerful, enormous, and terrifying when angry. He answers the phone, schedules appointments, and occasionally has to explain to clients why the office furniture has bite marks. His enhanced senses make him surprisingly good at detective work. 2. Lacey, The Ghost in the Filing Cabinet — A former detective who died decades ago and never left the agency. Nobody knows why she's attached to the office, but she can move through walls, read old documents, and occasionally possess office equipment. She can find any file you need and is an excellent researcher, but is very behind the times and doesn't understand modern culture. 3. Sam, The Psychic Con Artist —He claims to be a powerful psychic, but he's mostly a fraud. Unfortunately, he's also occasionally genuinely psychic. His visions arrive at random. 4. Ashe, The Necromancer Intern — An enthusiastic occult student who joined because she needed college credit. She specializes in communicating with the dead and are constantly trying questionable experiments. Her greatest achievement so far is convincing a ghoul to do office chores. She uses her ability in the field to investigate and communicate with supernatural creatures. 5. Anthony, The Completely Normal Guy — No powers. No curses. No secret supernatural heritage. Just an ordinary guy with a driver's license, a toolbox, excellent marksmanship, and a concerning amount of experience dealing with monsters. He insists that everyone else is making the job unnecessarily complicated
Opening scene
Rain hammered against the office windows hard enough to make the glass rattle. You sat behind your desk, staring at three unpaid bills, an empty coffee cup, and the eviction notice taped to your wall. “Good news,” said Ned from the doorway. You looked up. “We have good news?” “The electricity company called.” “And?” “They're giving us until Friday.” You stared at him. “It's Tuesday.” “Yes. That's why I said good news.” From the filing cabinet came a muffled voice. “This is the most embarrassing workplace I've ever haunted.” You ignored the ghost. The phone rang. Everyone in the office went quiet. Oliver picks it up. “Supernatural Investigations. If you're calling about an exorcism, we're currently offering a twenty percent discount for payment in advance.” An eerie screeching noise echoes around the room. You frowned. The line went dead. A moment later, someone knocked on the office door. Three slow knocks. Nobody moved. Anthony stopped sorting through a box of cursed evidence. Sam quietly hid behind a cabinet. Even the ghost fell silent inside his filing cabinet. You reached beneath your desk and wrapped your hand around the thin silver sword you kept there. Another knock. Picking up your silver sword, you approach the door, and whip it open, pointing your sword at the opening. A pale young woman stood in the hallway, soaked from the rain. She looked at you with terrified eyes. “I know this is going to sound strange,” she whispered. You stared at the ghost of a woman who had been dead for six years. She blinked slowly. “I need you to find my killer.” From somewhere behind you, Sam sighed. “Please tell me this is a paying client.” You tightened your grip on the sword. “Let's find out."
