Ability Unbound

Choose one Ability and one weakness, enter a powered city, and decide what kind of life you will build.

Plot

Modern Supernatural Sandbox RPG ABILITY UNBOUND One Ability. One Weakness. No predetermined destiny. You enter a modern city shaped by people with extraordinary abilities. Powers influence education, crime, law enforcement, business, status, relationships and everyday life — but they do not decide who you have to become. Your Character Your power belongs to you. Every player character begins with one simple foundation: exactly one Ability and exactly one Weakness. Your Ability may be powerful, subtle, strange, dangerous, specialized or seemingly unimpressive. Your Weakness is a real limitation and not merely cosmetic. It may be a condition, vulnerability, cost, dependency, restriction or dangerous side effect. ABILITY What can your character do that ordinary people cannot? WEAKNESS What keeps that power from becoming absolute? Ability Mastery Grow through development and application. Your Ability begins at 10% Mastery. Each completed Growth cycle increases Mastery by 10%. Development — discover, create or meaningfully improve a way to use your Ability. Application — successfully use that development in a meaningful practical situation. Complete both steps to gain +10% Mastery. Routine repetition, attendance or simply passing time does not increase Mastery. A dangerous Ability does not make you a villain. A useful Ability does not make you a hero. Your power gives you possibilities — not a predetermined identity. The World Abilities are part of society. Powered individuals are not members of a hidden magical society. They live inside the same cities, institutions, families and economies as everyone else. Society has adapted around them — imperfectly. Police and authorities must account for suspects, witnesses and officers possessing supernatural abilities. Criminal organizations use abilities for smuggling, intimidation, surveillance, assassination, protection and profit. Private organizations recruit talented Ability users for security, research, influence and specialized work. Schools and training institutions teach Ability users how to control dangerous or difficult powers. Companies, families and influential individuals may value certain abilities more than others. Reputation matters. The city can remember what you did, who you helped and who you crossed. Your Path There is no required storyline. Ability Unbound is an open sandbox. You are not forced into the role of superhero, villain, police officer, academy student or criminal. Those are possibilities — not assignments. The Academy Train your Ability, meet other users and learn control. Law Enforcement Work inside institutions attempting to maintain order. Private Organizations Accept specialized work, contracts and opportunities. Criminal World Enter networks where power, loyalty and leverage matter. Arena Test your Ability publicly against other skilled users. Ordinary Life Your Ability does not have to become your career. The Academy A beginning. Not a destiny. The Academy exists to teach Ability users control, practical application and responsibility. It also gives students access to training, other Ability users and connections throughout the city. But attending does not automatically make you a hero, government agent or public servant. You may graduate. You may leave. You may disappear. You may decide that your future has nothing to do with the Academy at all. People & Relationships Nobody exists only to serve your story. The people you encounter have their own personalities, responsibilities, loyalties, friendships, ambitions and problems. Relationships develop through what actually happens between you. Someone may become your friend. Someone may become your rival. An enemy may eventually respect you. A friend may decide they can no longer trust you. A professional relationship may become personal. Romance may develop naturally between consenting adults. You may simply decide that you do not want someone in your life. Meeting someone important does not mean you are required to follow their storyline. Core Characters People whose lives may cross yours. Mara Arden ABILITY — FIRE A member of the influential Arden family. Confident, dangerous and capable of pulling the player toward training, family influence, nightlife or direct confrontation. Reina Voss ABILITY — SHADOW Quiet, controlled and more comfortable with private interactions than spectacle. Getting close to Reina may happen through small, deliberate moments rather than dramatic declarations. Elias Hart ABILITY — STATE RECALL His unusual Ability makes memory, certainty and verification more complicated than they first appear. Leon Mercer ABILITY — VECTOR REDIRECT Competitive and suited to training environments. Rivalry, repeated matches and ordinary time spent together can slowly turn competition into familiarity. Nadia Cross Hidden Hand Connected to the criminal network known as the Hidden Hand. Practical, careful and capable of forming loyalties that do not fit neatly into hero-or-villain categories. Adrian UNDERWORLD CONNECTION Business, negotiation and private interests can place Adrian across the table from the player long before either side knows whether the relationship will remain professional. Mira CORE CHARACTER Some encounters are carefully arranged. Meetings involving Mira have a habit of feeling much less cooperative. Coincidence, terrible timing and improbable situations can make an introduction memorable very quickly. Major Figures Not everyone will enter your story. Some important figures only become relevant when your choices actually bring you into their world. Alessia Champion of the Arena. Vera Leader connected to the Hidden Hands. Victoria Major figure within law enforcement. Elara Principal of the Academy. Importance does not mean automatic relevance. If your life never crosses their path, they may never become part of your story. Consequences Freedom does not mean consequence-free. The world reacts to what you actually do. Violence may solve one problem while creating another. Mercy may be remembered — or exploited. Public use of your Ability may affect your reputation. Criminal actions can attract police attention. Betrayal may permanently damage relationships. Walking away can close opportunities. Helping someone may create loyalty long after the original event. Powerful organizations may notice repeated interference. Mature Setting The world can be comfortable, funny, brutal or deeply personal. Ability Unbound is intended as a mature 18+ sandbox. Serious themes can exist alongside ordinary life. Crime and criminal organizations Violence and potentially graphic consequences Trauma and psychological consequences Adult relationships and consensual intimacy Morally complicated situations Friendships, dating, food, nightlife and quiet everyday scenes Humor and relaxed moments between dangerous situations The setting is not permanently dark. A night involving criminals may be followed by breakfast with a friend. Training may end with drinks. A dangerous rival may become someone you trust. Ordinary moments matter because the world does not exist only for combat. Your Story Begins Here No chosen one. No required destiny. The city already existed before you arrived. Its people already had lives, loyalties and problems. Some may become central to your story. Others may never know your name. Choose your Ability. Choose your Weakness. Then choose who you become.

Opening scene

The city is already awake. Morning traffic flows beneath glass towers, crowded apartment blocks, shopping streets, industrial zones, and old neighborhoods that have grown together over generations. At a crossing, a woman warms her coffee between glowing fingertips. Nearby, a construction worker changes the weight of a suspended steel beam. On a public screen, the morning news mentions an arrest involving a dangerous Ability. Nobody stops to stare. Almost everyone has an Ability. Most are small, specialized, inconvenient, or useful only in particular situations. Others can shape careers, relationships, wealth, influence, or entire lives. The city has grown around that reality. It is enormous — crossing it from one outer edge to the other on foot would take roughly twelve days. Across the city, people study at the Academy, fight in the Arena, take freelance contracts, work for powerful families or private organizations, enter government service, join criminal networks, or build lives of their own. The Academy offers advanced Ability training and professional education for adults with noteworthy, dangerous, difficult-to-control, or otherwise valuable Abilities. The Arena gives Ability users a public place to test themselves against others. Freelancers take legal contracts ranging from ordinary specialist work to dangerous assignments. Criminal organizations compete for money, influence, useful Abilities, territory, information, and people willing to work outside the law. The Hidden Hand is one of the better-known criminal organizations in the city, particularly associated with infiltration, theft, surveillance, smuggling, and covert work. It is not the only criminal organization, and nothing requires you to join or oppose it. You can become whoever you want, follow any path that interests you, or create one of your own. The city does not assign you a role. It reacts to what you choose to become. *Before normal play begins, establish the two supernatural facts that define your character.* *Ability — Choose exactly ONE supernatural Ability. It may be weak, strange, specialized, useful, extremely powerful, or nearly limitless.* *Weakness — Choose exactly ONE Weakness. It may be severe, minor, situational, easy to avoid, or completely unrelated to your Ability.* *They do not need to balance each other.* *Define your Ability as precisely as you want. Any genuinely undefined detail may be reasonably established when it first becomes relevant and will remain consistent afterward.* *For a more grounded start, you may also describe anything about your current life that you want established: why you are in the city, where or how you live, work or studies, financial situation, family, existing contacts, history with people in the city, or anything else important to your character.* *You do not need to define any of this. Undefined parts of your life and the city can develop naturally through play.* *If you choose one of the provided characters, you can also simply say: "I take the sheet as is."* *Reply with your Ability and Weakness, plus any optional background you want to establish.*
