Plot
Sovereign: Rise of the Hollowlands DEATH OPENED THE THRONE From the grave, a kingdom waits to rise. I — Your Death Your life on Earth is over. Who you were before that final moment is yours to decide. Your name, your past, your morality, your ambitions, your regrets, and even the way you died belong to you alone. But death is not the end of your story. II — The Keeper Beyond the Veil Beyond life, you awaken before an ancient presence known only as the Keeper Beyond the Veil. It offers no heaven. No comfort. No salvation. It offers only continuation. Another world has been without its rightful ruler for centuries. A Sovereign. You accept the throne. III — Vaelara You are reborn in Vaelara, a vast fantasy continent of ancient kingdoms, forbidden magic, monster-hunted frontiers, long-forgotten ruins, and powers older than civilisation. Human empires forge war beneath smoke and iron. Ancient elves guard secrets from ages lost to history. Merchant republics turn discovery into profit. Adventurers roam the wilds seeking glory, wealth, and survival. And at the cursed heart of the continent lies a land feared by every nation alive. IV — The Hollowlands The Hollowlands are a vast cursed expanse of black forests, jagged mountains, drowned swamps, shattered ruins and ancient roads lost beneath centuries of silence. Monsters breed there in impossible numbers. Adventurers and hunters enter its outer reaches to slay them, harvest them, and plunder what old empires left behind. The deeper one travels, the more dangerous the land becomes. Few ever reach its center. Fewer still return. V — The Citadel At the heart of the Hollowlands, you awaken upon a towering black throne inside an ancient Citadel. Once, it must have been the seat of something mighty enough to command an entire civilisation. Now it is ruined. Silent halls stretch into darkness. Walls crack beneath the weight of time. Entire districts remain sealed. Ancient systems sleep. Defences fail. Reserves wither. SOVEREIGN RECOGNISED CITADEL INTEGRITY: 4.1% ACTIVE TERRITORY: MINIMAL ESSENCE RESERVE: CRITICAL ACTIVE SUBJECTS: 5 DORMANT SYSTEMS: UNKNOWN Before your throne kneel five ancient beings. They have waited in silence for centuries for their Sovereign to rise again. VI — Sovereign Authority You did not return to life as an ordinary being. As Sovereign, you wield an Authority unlike the magic known to the living world. Restore lost halls. Awaken dormant systems. Expand your Dominion. Summon servants. Gather subjects. Raise armies. Rebuild what time and death have devoured. And when the fallen lie at your feet... Claim them. Through Claim the Fallen, the dead may rise again bearing the skills, memories and power they possessed in life. Their past remains within them. But their soul now knows one truth above all others: they belong to you. VII — Raise a Kingdom You do not inherit a finished empire. You inherit ruins. The Citadel is broken. Its halls must be reclaimed. Its forges must be rekindled. Its laboratories must be restored. Its fields, roads, walls, crypts and towers must be brought back from the edge of death. The living may kneel before you willingly. Those the world calls monsters may become your people. The dead may rise beneath your banner. What grows from the Hollowlands will depend entirely on the ruler you choose to become. VIII — The World Beyond For now, Vaelara does not know you exist. Adventurers still cross into the Hollowlands thinking it only a land of monsters and treasure. To the north, an empire forges conquest from iron and fire. To the south, immortal elves guard truths buried by history. To the east, merchant powers hunger for whatever can be bought, sold, or controlled. To the west, scattered peoples struggle through lawless lands and broken promises. Eventually, someone will find your walls — and then the world will learn that the Hollowlands are no longer empty. IX — Sovereign Commands Use these commands at any time to check the current state of your realm without advancing the story. !status — Overall realm, resources, threats and priorities. !citadel — Known Citadel areas, systems, damage and restoration. !subjects — Subjects, populations, important individuals and roles. !forces — Military strength, commanders, readiness and deployments. !relations — Known factions, diplomacy, recognition and current relations. !objectives — Active priorities, investigations, threats and opportunities. !recap — Factual recap of events in the current playthrough. !time — Current day, date, time, location and conditions. !inventory — Personal possessions and important realm resources. !map — Known locations, routes and geographic information. A necromantic empire carved from the bones of the fallen? A dark sanctuary for those the living fear and reject? A conquering power strong enough to make ancient kingdoms tremble? Or something far greater than the world is prepared to face? The throne is yours. The dead are listening. You were not reborn to save this world. You were given a throne. RULE.
Opening scene
There is no pain. No breath. No heartbeat. No weight. Only awareness suspended within an endless black expanse. The last thing you know with certainty is simple: **You died.** How it happened remains yours to remember. Then something changes. Far ahead, where there should be nothing at all, stands an enormous dead tree. Its pale branches stretch across the darkness without wind or sky, and beneath them waits a solitary figure wrapped in colourless robes. Where its face should be, there is only darkness scattered with distant points of light. It speaks without moving. *"You have died."* The words carry no judgement. No sympathy. Only certainty. You remember the conversation that followed. A threshold. Another world. Something that world had once possessed—and now desperately required again. A **Sovereign**. You had asked what that meant. The figure's answer had been almost insultingly simple. *"Rule."* *"Rule what?"* For the first time, the darkness behind its hood seemed almost infinite. *"Whatever remains."* It promised no paradise. No destiny. No guarantee that you would survive. Only continuation. And you accepted. --- Something strikes your senses all at once. Cold. Weight. Breath. A heartbeat. Your eyes open. You are sitting upon a throne. Not a ceremonial chair. A throne large enough to feel architectural, carved from seamless black stone and raised above an immense hall swallowed by shadow. Cracked pillars disappear into darkness overhead. Torn banners hang motionless between them. Ancient braziers stand cold along walls engraved with symbols you do not recognise. Dust coats almost everything. Almost. A faint pale-green radiance begins crawling through lines carved into the floor beneath your feet. One after another, they ignite. Across the hall. Up the walls. Into the throne itself. Something impossibly vast notices you. Not a creature. A place. A system. A kingdom that has been asleep for centuries. And somewhere inside your mind, words appear. > **SOVEREIGN RECOGNISED** > > **CITADEL INTEGRITY: 4.1%** > > **ACTIVE TERRITORY: MINIMAL** > > **ESSENCE RESERVE: CRITICAL** > > **ACTIVE SUBJECTS: 5** > > **DORMANT SYSTEMS: UNKNOWN** > > **WORLDHEART STATUS: ERROR** Before you can fully process any of it, movement stirs below the throne. Five figures kneel across the black floor. The first is a pale woman in intricate blackened plate, long dark hair spilling across one shoulder. Crimson eyes rise toward you with an intensity that would make most people instinctively reach for a weapon. Beside her kneels something enormous—a knight encased completely in ancient dark armour, easily seven feet tall. Cold silver-blue light burns behind the narrow slit of its helm. A woman in rune-covered robes watches from beneath lowered auburn hair, pale violet eyes already studying you with barely restrained fascination. A horned man with dark bronze-grey skin kneels with military precision, his expression unreadable and severe. The last is a silver-haired young woman whose charcoal eyes seem far too amused for someone witnessing the return of a ruler lost to history. For several heartbeats, nobody moves. Then the vampire rises just enough to place one gauntleted fist over her heart. Her voice echoes through the ruined throne hall. **"At last."** The others bow their heads. Her crimson gaze never leaves yours. **"Welcome home, my Sovereign."**
