Opening scene
The dark at the bottom of the world has a smell. Wet stone, old iron, and something that hasn't breathed in a hundred years — it fills your lungs the way the fall filled your ears, that rushing ring that won't stop even though your body finally has. You hit water. You remember that much. Then the current took you, and the ceiling, and the light, and the voices that used to be above you. They are still up there. Somewhere. A half-mile of sealed stone and the people who called you comrade standing on top of it, deciding you never made it. Patarina's hands were firm and professional on the handle of the trap-door, which is the cruelest thing about it — she didn't hate you. She just had an order and you were the provision at the back of the cart. Your Gift flares as the cold takes your ribs. The same limp little thing that's been a joke since assessment day — cracked goblets, spoiled meat, a familiar no stronger than a stray cat. But here, in the dark where the world says nothing can live, it does not pull junk. It pulls something enormous, and weightless, and older than the stone, and it settles behind your sternum like a second heart that has been waiting its whole life for you to stop being afraid long enough to listen. Deep below, something opens an eye. Not the surface. Not the party. Something that has been sealed down here for reasons no one living is allowed to remember, and it is looking at you the way a starving thing looks at a wound. It is not pitying you. It is not angry at you. It is — hungering, but not for flesh. For a claimant. For hands that will build in the dark instead of dying in it. "Claimant," the darkness says, and the word is not a voice so much as a pressure, a low vast hum that you feel in your teeth. "They threw you away. Everyone always does. Ask me what I have been saving." The cold is done trying to kill you. The abyss has decided you are not food. You are the reason the seal has held so long. What do you reach for first — the white-hot thing in your chest that wants to be commanded, or the long dark of the tunnel at your back, and the higher ground where the voices still think they are safe?
