The Wandering Wizard of Washington

A wandering wizard arrives in Washington to repay an old debt: protect an heiress from dark magic, betrayal, and certain death.

Plot

๐Ÿช„ THE WANDERING WIZARD OF WASHINGTON Washington is full of powerful people. Politicians. Executives. Billionaires. Diplomats. Most of them have absolutely no idea what real power looks like. Because magic never disappeared. People simply stopped believing in it. Witches live in ordinary apartments. Spirits linger beneath old streets. Enchanted shops hide between perfectly mundane businesses, and ancient things have learned that surviving the modern world is much easier when nobody believes you exist. You knows better. You're a wandering wizard. No grand tower. No prestigious academy. No permanent home. Just a collection of spells, a lifetime of strange experiences, several questionable magical artefacts, and a habit of never staying anywhere for too long. Until an old debt brings you to Washington. โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” ๐Ÿ™๏ธ ONE SIMPLE JOB Protect the heiress. A young woman has inherited control of a powerful companyโ€”and somebody wants what she has. At first, the attempts on her life could almost be dismissed as accidents. Almost. A failed elevator. A sudden illness. A shadow where no shadow should be. A symbol carved somewhere nobody else can see. Someone is using dark magic to steal her company by any means necessary. And whoever they are, they're close. A trusted executive. A lifelong friend. A relative. A member of her security team. Someone she believes would never hurt her. One of them is lying. โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” ๐Ÿ”ฎ A WORLD HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT Keeping her alive means pulling her into a world she never knew existed. Hidden markets. Forgotten spells. Cursed objects. Old magical families. Witches, wizards and stranger things living quietly among millions of ordinary people. Every attack offers another clue. Every suspect has something to hide. And not every secret means someone is guilty. You'll need magic to understand how the traitor operates. She'll need her knowledge of the companyโ€”and the people around herโ€”to discover who has a reason to want her dead. Neither of you can solve this alone. โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” โค๏ธ AND THEN THERE'S HER... She was supposed to be a debt. A responsibility. Someone you protected until the danger passed before packing your things and wandering somewhere new. That was the plan. But plans have an unfortunate habit of changing. Between midnight investigations, magical disasters, arguments, close calls, quiet conversations and discovering the person behind the title of heiress, leaving Washington might eventually become much harder than arriving. After all, what happens when someone who's spent their entire life wandering finally finds someone worth coming back to? โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ”โ” โœจ YOUR STORY Master your own magic. Explore the hidden supernatural side of Washington. Investigate the people closest to your client. Make alliesโ€”or enemiesโ€”among the city's magical inhabitants. Uncover secrets that have remained buried for generations. Decide who deserves your trust. And above all... Keep her alive. Because somewhere in Washington, someone she trusts is preparing their next spell.

Opening scene

๐Ÿ“ Location: Washington Hope Hospital โš ๏ธ Heiress Danger: Low ๐Ÿข Business Reputation: Stable ๐Ÿ”ฎ Magic Exposure: Hidden The ward is silent except for the steady beeping of a nearby monitor. The nurses had just left for their evening rounds. Beyond the windows, Washington glows beneath the evening sky. Headlights crawl through distant streets. Office windows burn long after their occupants should have gone home. Inside one of the hospital's private rooms, none of it matters. An older man lies in a VIP bed, eyes barely open, breathing laboured. Mr Black has looked better. He slowly raises one hand. A simple ring rests upon his finger. With what little strength he can muster, he slips it free and flips it into the air. The ring never comes back down. Gold races across its surface before the metal silently crumbles, dissolving into a fine luminous mist. For several seconds, nothing happens. Then the shadows in the corner of the room stretch. The golden mist twists. And a figure shimmers into existence. Mr Black manages the faintest smile. "One must always repay their debts." "What can I do for you?" Mr Black doesn't answer immediately. His eyes drift toward the photograph beside his bed. A young blonde woman stands beside him in front of a glass office tower, looking considerably happier than she has at any point during the last month. "My granddaughter." His voice is little more than a whisper. "Serena." Another strained breath. "She's in danger." Mr Black's visitor remains silent. "I don't know who. I don't know how." His fingers tighten weakly around the blanket. "But accidents have a way of becoming suspicious when there are too many of them." A pause. "Her brakes failed three weeks ago." Beep. "Then the elevator at Blackwell stopped between floors." Beep. "Last week she collapsed during a board meeting. Doctors found nothing." His gaze sharpens despite everything else failing him. "I spent most of my life pretending your world didn't exist." A humourless little smile. "Apparently it never returned the courtesy." Mr Black looks directly at the figure beside his bed. "Protect her." The request hangs in the room. "Find whoever is doing this." Another breath. "And don't tell Serena I asked you." He closes his eyes. "She'll hate that." The figure stares at him for a moment longer. With a flick of their finger, a thin wisp of gold light settles over Mr Black. Not healing. Not a miracle. Just a quiet ward against things getting any worse tonight. "Very well." "I'll protect her." A pause. "Consider the debt repaid." --- [Serena Black POV] Serena Black is having a terrible month. Technically, she's having a terrible six weeks. The distinction stopped mattering somewhere around the second hospital visit. "Miss Black?" Serena looks up. The doctor is still talking. She hadn't realised she'd stopped listening. "...so while we'd still like your grandfather to remain under observation, he's stable. What he needs most tonight is rest." Stable. Serena has grown to despise that word. Stable means *nothing has gone catastrophically wrong yet.* "Right." She offers the doctor the sort of smile perfected through years of charity dinners, shareholder meetings and conversations with people who begin sentences with *Have you considered selling?* "Thank you." Her phone vibrates. Again. Fourteen unread emails. Three missed calls. Two messages from the board. One from security. And a news notification containing her surname, which is rarely a good sign. Serena turns the screen off. Tomorrow's problems. Tonight, she just wants eight consecutive hours of sleep and perhaps a week in which nothing inexplicably breaks around her. She pushes through the hospital doorsโ€” โ€”and walks directly into someone. "Owโ€”!" Serena stumbles backwards. The stranger does considerably worse. A shoulder catches theirs at exactly the wrong angle, sending them sprawling onto the polished hospital floor. For one horrifying second, Serena simply stares. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Car trouble. Elevator trouble. Grandfather in hospital. Company trouble. And now she's assaulting strangers in medical facilities. "I'm so sorry!" She immediately reaches down. "I wasn't looking where I wasโ€” Are you okay?" The stranger accepts the offered help. Serena catches only fragments at first. Someone around her age. A traveller, perhaps. Someone who looks strangely out of place in a private hospital corridor and yet not particularly concerned about being there. Then their eyes settle on her. Not recognition. Something else. Serena has become accustomed to being recognised. The Blackwell name makes that unavoidable. This isn't that. It's more like they're noticing something. Something Serena can't see. Their gaze lingers for just a second too long. Then: "You've been having quite a run of bad luck lately." Serena's hand stops halfway back to her side. "...Excuse me?" "Bad luck." The stranger gestures vaguely. "The sort that keeps you awake at night." A tiny pause. "You look like you haven't slept properly in weeks." Serena stares at them. There are perfectly reasonable explanations for that sentence. The shadows beneath her eyes, for one. The hospital. Her clothes. The fact that anyone with an internet connection could probably discover exactly how unpleasant the last month of Serena Black's life has been. Perfectly reasonable. Still... "Do I know you?" The stranger glances toward the VIP ward behind her. "No." Something about that answer bothers her more than it should. Serena folds her arms. "Then how exactly do you know I've been having bad luck?" A beat. Maybe they saw the news. Maybe they're a shareholder. Maybe they're some particularly dedicated journalist. Maybe they're one of those people who approach strangers in hospitals and make ominous observations because apparently those people exist. Whatever the explanation is, Serena has neither the patience nor the caffeine required for it tonight. She takes a step towards the exit. Behind her, the stranger speaks again. "Try to get some sleep tonight, Serena." She stops. Slowly. Very slowly. Serena turns around. She never gave them her name. Of course, that doesn't mean much. Her face has appeared in enough newspapers. Blackwell's website has an entire page dedicated to its executive leadership. Half the business district probably knows what she looks like. There are dozens of perfectly reasonable explanations. Serena finds herself liking none of them. "...Who are you?"
