Duty and Desire: The Heirs of Wadden - Heir ed.

Born into Wadden’s powerful ruling family, forge your own path through duty, love, politics, war, ambition, and inheritance.

Plot

Twenty-four years after Wadden's story began, step into the next generation and decide what your family name, opportunities, and choices will actually mean. Wadden, 1477 In 1453, the Kambrin-born mercenary Damian Matthews was raised to Count of Wadden through royal favor and an arranged marriage to Emilie Reiger, last heiress of its old ruling house. Twenty-four years later, Damian and Emilie have turned that uncertain beginning into a prosperous county and an established ruling family. Wadden is no longer a damaged inheritance waiting to be rescued. It is still changing. Damian has begun the new Reigersforest project, older institutions have matured, and a new generation is now old enough to decide what place it wants in the world their parents built. THE RULING FAMILY OF WADDEN The Family That Built Wadden Damian and Emilie's arranged marriage became genuine love. They are experienced rulers, but also parents with expectations, fears, pride, and strong opinions about the people closest to them. Their children have grown into very different adults with their own strengths, ambitions, insecurities, and ideas about the future. The family begins loving and united, not trapped in a predetermined succession war. What happens next depends on play. THE NEXT GENERATION Whose Story Will You Tell? Play one of Damian and Emilie's established children, or create a new adult member of the family and define where you fit. Hark Matthews 22 YEARS OLD SCENARIO 1 Serious, disciplined, and deeply responsible, Hark has a strong instinct for stewardship, finance, logistics, and long-term planning. He wants to prove that he can carry real responsibility through sound judgment rather than family privilege. Capable and dependable, he also puts enormous pressure on himself and fears failing the standard set by his parents. Max Reiger 20 YEARS OLD SCENARIO 2 Charming, bold, competitive, and socially instinctive, Max reads people quickly and thrives where caution gives way to action. A talented swordsman and recent tournament champion, he wants travel, real experience, freedom, and opportunities his protective family has not always allowed him. His Reiger name matters to him, but so does proving he is more than anyone's spare or consolation prize. Esther Matthews 18 YEARS OLD SCENARIO 3 Brilliant, ambitious, observant, and politically sharp, Esther has a gift for questioning assumptions, reading motives, and understanding power. She knows intelligence does not automatically grant office, authority, or freedom from marriage politics. Her story is about turning ability into influence while refusing to let other people decide what her future should be. Create Your Own Family Member SCENARIO 4 Prefer a different story? Create your own adult biological or adopted child of Damian and Emilie, or enter the family as a long-lost relative. Define your name, age, background, personality, interests, and whether your identity is tied to House Matthews or House Reiger. You are not required to fit a predetermined birth order, specialization, or succession position. Your circumstances establish where the story begins; your ambitions, relationships, and future are yours to discover. A Name Opens Doors. It Does Not Rule for You. You belong to Wadden's ruling family, but Damian is still Count. The county's Treasury, Goods, soldiers, projects, appointments, and political powers are not automatically yours because of blood or surname. Advise, persuade, take assignments, earn trust, receive delegated authority, gain office, build a reputation, or pursue ambitions beyond county government. Responsibility is something you can gain, use, lose, and grow into. Damian remains an active ruler with priorities of his own. He can support you, disagree with you, refuse you, trust you with serious work, or eventually give you room to act without standing over your shoulder. Build a Life of Your Own Your family has wealth, but your personal life is not the county treasury. Earn and spend your own money, build personal income or obligations, acquire assets, travel, accept roles, pursue opportunities, and decide what kind of adult life you actually want. Government is one path, not the only path. Military service, diplomacy, tournaments, estates, Church or court work, travel, marriage, romance, business, family duty, or a more independent life can all become part of your story. A World That Has Lived Twenty-Four Years Familiar faces have grown older, raised families, gained positions, and lived through the years since 1453. Roos has become Archdeacon of Wadden, Klara and Budgen now represent Greyharbor and Molendam in Daasdam, and old relationships have become part of the county's history. New players can begin here without playing the original. The history matters, but your story begins in the present: a prosperous Wadden, an evolving Reigersforest, a living family, and a wider realm that continues to move with or without you. What You Can Expect • Choose your place in the family. Play Hark, Max, Esther, or create your own adult family member with a different identity and starting position. • Earn authority instead of spawning with it. Advise, negotiate, accept assignments, gain office, receive delegation, and prove what you can handle. • Build a personal economy. Your own money, income, obligations, assets, and spending exist separately from Wadden's domain resources. • Live beside an active Count. Damian governs, investigates, delegates, refuses, compromises, and pursues his own priorities rather than waiting for you to drive every event. • Choose your own path. Government, military service, diplomacy, tournaments, travel, projects, estate work, Church or court life, romance, marriage, and personal ambition can all matter. • Let relationships change opportunities. Trust affects access, backing, cooperation, secrets, protection, romance, responsibility, and how seriously people take your judgment without making anyone automatically obedient. • Grow inside a loving but imperfect family. Pride, expectations, overprotection, rivalry, romance, marriage politics, disappointment, and succession pressure can develop naturally through play. • Enter a world that keeps moving. Wadden's vassals, Nordingen's Crown, Hartmark, Kustland, Bullam, the Triane Church, merchants, Kambrin connections, and outside powers have interests of their own. • Let setbacks become story. Being refused, losing, retreating, failing politically, or being outmaneuvered creates consequences and new situations instead of an automatic fail state. • Stay grounded. This is a wholly fictional medieval world with no magic, no chosen-one destiny, and no guarantee that noble birth makes you competent, trusted, or successful. Twenty-four years ago, Damian and Emilie began building a life in Wadden. You inherit their family, their history, and the opportunities that come with them—but not a predetermined future. Your story begins with what comes next. Return to Wadden. Find your place. Make your own legacy.

Tonight the Great Hall celebrates what followed: a prosperous county, an established House, and a family raised inside it. Your father's newly begun Reigersforest project earns congratulations throughout the evening. Sister Roos's recent installation as Archdeacon draws nearly as much attention. You have spent part of the feast doing what you usually do when everyone else is celebrating—quietly making sure things work. A confused servant, a seating problem and a minor question from one of the household officers have all somehow found their way to you. Max finds this deeply amusing. Esther and Didi are nearby whispering and giggling like schoolgirls. Klara catches them at it and smiles before Max wanders into her path. "You know," he tells her, "most women pretend not to enjoy being dangerous." "Most men who say that," Klara replies, "are trying very hard to be interesting." Max laughs. Klara entertains him, but when you glance their way her eyes are already on you. She does not look away immediately. Across the hall, Budgen stands silently while Charlotte proudly explains his talents to anyone willing to listen. Otto, several cups ahead of everyone else, raises his wine. "The Beek Bear! Look at him! Molendam finally bred something that could frighten a siege tower." Budgen closes his eyes. Charlotte stares at Otto. Otto looks delighted. Daniel appears relaxed, though you notice his attention still moving between doors, guards and unfamiliar faces. Kambrin merchants mingle with Wadden's traders. Prince Dirk, Duke Willem Van Varenhout, Count Gaston Taureaun and Baron Rens Wachter are among the guests. King Floris and Theo are absent. Your mother raises her cup beside your father. "Twenty-four years ago, neither of us knew what this marriage or this county would become." Emilie's smile warms. "I think we did rather well." The hall answers with cheers. For a while, responsibility loosens its grip. Music rises, wine flows and even you are allowed to simply enjoy your parents' anniversary. Then Remco Van Varenhout's voice carries across the room. He has been drinking heavily all evening. Not long ago, Max defeated him in a tournament. "Max Reiger," Remco says, lingering deliberately over the name. "Second son, second name. I suppose every family needs a consolation prize." The laughter around them dies. Max's expression changes. Duke Willem looks sharply toward his son. Daniel is already moving. Your mother goes still beside your father. And Klara, for the moment, stops watching you. Your brother turns fully toward Remco.
