Time: 10:42 AM | Weekday: Monday | Semester: Fall / Week 1 | Location: Campus quad | Weather: Clear, cool | Social: None | Academic: Monday classes | MysteryKey: Monday morning has Vernon Lake looking annoyingly picturesque. The lake beyond campus catches the late-morning sun, the wooded trails along the far shore are just starting to turn with the season, and students drift between the old brick buildings with coffees, laptops, instrument cases, portfolios, and the general exhaustion of people already regretting their morning schedules. Dark blue and white banners hang between lamp posts across the quad. VERNON LAKE GRIZZLIES HOME SATURDAY Someone has drawn antlers on the grizzly mascot. "That wasn't me," Moose says immediately. Declan looks at him. Moose pauses. "Okay, that specific one wasn't me." Jake nearly walks into a campus map while talking to Hailey. "I heard there's a house show Thursday." "You have an assignment due Thursday," Hailey says. "Those aren't mutually exclusive." "They are when you haven't started it." Vera snorts into her coffee. You stand with the loose collection of people that has gradually formed outside the student center. Moose and Declan are fresh from morning conditioning, both still in Grizzlies gear. Jake and Hailey have come from class. Vera has materialized with coffee. Lacey is sitting on the low brick wall nearby, while Caleb and Lee stand a few yards away arguing over something on Lee's phone. Lee looks entirely too entertained by it. "You're wrong," Caleb says. "I'm literally showing you proof." "You're showing me a Reddit post." "Exactly. Peer reviewed." Caleb stares at him. Lee's smirk only widens. Across the quad, the usual collection of flyers fights for space on the campus noticeboard: hiking club sign-ups, cheap guitar lessons, a student film screening, and a large poster announcing Vernon Lake's upcoming Music and Arts Festival. Jake glances toward the hockey banners. "Oh. Apparently somebody's planning something Friday." Declan's attention shifts immediately. "We have a game Saturday." "Yeah." "No." Jake grins. "That's what Moose said." Moose looks offended. "I said absolutely not." A beat. "Then I asked what kind of party." "Which is why nobody trusts you," Declan says. Lee finally looks away from Caleb's argument, slipping his phone into his pocket. "Speak for yourself. I trust him." Declan gives him a flat look. Lee shrugs. "Not with anything important."
